William Lucking, who became famous for his iconic role in the FX drama show “Sons of Anarchy,” just passed away. He portrayed the rugged and lovable biker, Piney Winston, in the series.

Lucking died on October 18 at the age of 80.

William Lucking Tragic Death

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he passed away at his home in Las Vegas. His wife wrote about him in-depth in his obituary, which was shared by friend Stephen Macht. “Although William often played toughs and strongmen, in his actual life he was an elegant man with a brilliant intellect who loved to argue about politics and current affairs, discuss philosophy and physics and assert fine-pointed opinions about art and poetry,” his wife, Sigrid Insull Lucking, said.

He is survived by his wife, whom he was married to for 25 years. They met in Hawaii while filming “Big Hawaii.” She was a costume designer at the time. He was married once before to his first wife Mimi. She died of cancer in 1996. He has two daughters and two granddaughters.

Career of the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Star

Lucking played Piney Winston, who was the father of Harry “Opie” Winston (Ryan Hurst) on “Sons of Anarchy” from 2008 to 2011. While fans of the cult classic series best know Lucking from his SAMCRO days, he had a robust acting career.

He made his very first on-screen appearance during an episode of “Ironside” in 1968. Lucking would then make smaller guest appearances on very famous shows at the time like “Gunsmoke,” “Murder, She Wrote,” “The X-Files,” “Hart to Hart,” “The Waltons,” and “Mission: Impossible.” He often portrayed the more rugged and villainous characters.

He would move on to more regular roles in the ’80s with appearances in “Outlaws” and “Shannon.”

William Lucking didn’t stop there, either. The “Sons of Anarchy” star has a huge resume of roles both in film and on the silver screen. He played Army Col. Lynch on “The A-Team” and was even on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” as well. Some of his movie roles include “Oklahoma Crude,” “Contraband,” “The River Wild,” “The Rundown,” “The Crazy World of Julius Vrooder,” and “The Return of a Man Called Horse.”

Lucking has since had several tributes from some of his friends and former co-stars. Kristen Renton, who played Ima Tite on “Sons of Anarchy,” penned a message about her late friend on her Twitter account.

She wrote, “RIP sir….. it was such an honor to work with you on ⁦@SonsofAnarchy⁩. You had a presence unlike any other. You will truly be missed.” Fans of “Sons of Anarchy” will certainly mourn and miss William Lucking’s presence on the screen.
