Charlie Hunnam and Mel Gibson are starring in a new mystery-thriller-comedy called “Last Looks,” scheduled to release in February 2022. The film also stars Morena Baccarin, Dominic Monaghan, Jacob Scipio, and Clancy Brown.
“Last Looks” is based on the novel of the same name by Howard Michael Gould. Gould is also writing the screenplay. “Last Looks” is the first book in the Charlie Waldo detective series; the book came out in 2018, with the sequel, “Below the Line,” coming out the next year. “Last Looks” was Gould’s debut novel.
The story follows disgraced LAPD detective Charlie Waldo as he secludes himself to a minimalist life in the woods. It also follows Alistair Pinch, an alcoholic actor whose wife turns up murdered. Pinch can’t remember if he killed her or not. Cue Waldo’s former lover Lorena Nascimento calling Waldo for help on the case, and a slew of hilarious and sometimes dangerous characters entering Waldo’s formerly isolated life.
Kirkus Reviews said of the protagonist, “Charlie Waldo must be the only investigator in crime literature who has a composting toilet and thinks about whether a pair of socks is one item or two or whether a box of bullets is one thing or many.” He’s conscious of his carbon footprint and rides his bike everywhere. Charlie Waldo is a new kind of detective; gone are the days of hard-drinking, wise-cracking noir detectives or painfully damaged ex-cops. Charlie Waldo is something we’ve never seen before.
The film is set for a day-and-date release in theaters and VOD. Charlie Hunnam plays Waldo, with Mel Gibson as Alistair Pinch, Morena Baccarin as Lorena Nascimento, Dominic Monaghan as Warren Gomes, Jacob Scipio as Don Q, and Clancy Brown as Big Jim Cuppy.
Another Film for February: ‘Uncharted’ with Mark Wahlberg
There’s another action-packed thriller coming to theaters in February 2022: “Uncharted,” starring Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland. The movie is based off the popular video game series of the same name. It’s a prequel of sorts, following the exploits of young Nathan Drake as he learns how to hunt treasure from his mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan.
The film promises to be dark, gritty, and adventurous, much like the video game. There’s also a little bit of humor thrown in there. It’s mystery, intrigue, and complicated relationships tied up with a treasure hunting bow. The film seems to focus on Nathan’s tough relationship with his older brother, Sam Drake. We’ll see how that plays out when the film releases in February.
“Uncharted” took a while to get off the ground, believe it or not. It’s been in the works since 2008, but various director changes caused it to be pushed back year after year. It finally started production in March 2020, with Ruben Fleischer connected as director. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Tom Holland, Sophia Taylor Ali, and Antonio Banderas.
