‘Sons of Anarchy’ Star Lands Major New Movie Role

Theo Rossi, a former Sons of Anarchy star, has a new project coming up; playing alongside Aubrey Plaza in the new indie film Emily the Criminal, written and directed by John Patton Ford.

Emily the Criminal follows Plaza’s character, Emily, as she gets into a few scrapes; described as “down on her luck,” according to Pop Culture, this leads her to commit credit card fraud. This crime drags her into a world of deadly consequences.

In particular, Rossi plays Youcef, a man with “some big goals” and “a lot of hustle”. How Youcelf and Emily will interact is currently unknown. The film also cast Megalyn Echikunwoke and Gina Gershon, but their roles are, as of now, unclear.

Theo Rossi’s Recent Roles

Theo Rossi played Juan Carlos “Juice” Ortiz on Sons of Anarchy from 2008 to 2014. Juice was his first big television role, as part of the main cast for 85 episodes. Recently, he starred in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead alongside Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Harwick, and Tig Notaro.

The film follows a group of mercenaries who “venture into the quarantine zone for the greatest heist ever,” according to Netflix. In 2017 he was nominated for an Imagen Award for Best Actor for his role as Francisco “Ghost” Alvarez in Ricardo de Montreuil’s film Lowriders.

In addition to Emily the Criminal, he has a role in the Netflix series True Story; the series follows Kevin Hart playing a fictionalized version of himself, a comedian named Kid, with Wesley Snipes as his older brother, Carlton. The series begins with Kid on tour, stopping in his hometown.

While there, a “missed evening with his older brother threatens to destroy everything he’s built,” according to Pop Culture. Rossi plays Gene, a superfan who follows all of Kid’s shows.

On Playing Shades in ‘Luke Cage’

Additionally, Theo Rossi played Hernan “Shades” Alvarez in the Netflix/Marvel series Luke Cage. Shades is one of the villains of the show, and Rossi has some insightful thoughts about him as a character.

He told The Hollywood Reporter, “What Cheo [Coker] does so well and what Marvel and Netflix does with a lot of these villains, is they layer them. You’re really going deep into their back history. That’s why you don’t know how you feel about them at the end. Are they villains, or are they heroes, because the more you learn about them, the more humanized they become.”

Currently, Netflix has made no plans to renew Luke Cage for a season 3, but Rossi is still holding out hope. “I don’t believe the story’s over,” he said. ‘I believe there’s more to it. We just started cracking the shell a little. We’re just getting started.”
