If you’re both a Sons of Anarchy and classic cartoons fan, then this one’s for you. Ron Perlman is set to voice a lead character in the next Transformers film!

Brace yourselves, Autobots and Decepticons: Ron Perlman is crossing over into the Transformers franchise! The actor confirms the news himself today on Instagram with both a nifty graphic and the following pitch-perfect caption:

“When Optimus Transforms ‘em they Stay Transformed!!!”

The Sons of Anarchy alum has been cast as Optimus Primal, one of the lead characters in the Transformers pantheon’s Beast Wars. As such, he’ll lead the newest film in the franchise – Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Rise of the Beasts comes as the latest live-action film in the long-running franchise. As fans will know, the plot will draw from the classic Beast Wars: Transformers spinoff series. Within, Optimus Primal takes the form of a gorilla at his own choice. A perfect fit for the brawny, stalwart Pearlman!

This isn’t the first time the Sons of Anarchy vet has voiced Primal, however. He did so in 2018 for the Transformers: Power of the Primes web series, as well. Regardless, fans are ecstatic to see him take this role to the big screen.

From ‘Sons of Anarchy’ to ‘Pacific Rim’ to… More Giant Robots!

Indeed, Ron Perlman has made a habit of starring in giant robot franchises in recent years. His turn in Legendary‘s Pacific Rim was a highlight of the film.

As for Rise of the Beasts, PopCulture.com notes that this adventure will travel back to the 1990s for some retro Transformers action. There, the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons (all Transformers based on beasts and dinosaurs from Earth’s animal kingdom) will collide with the Autobots and Decepticons.

Joining Sons of Anarchy‘s Ron Perlman will be Anthony Ramos of In The Heights and Dominque Fishback of Judas and the Black Messiah. Steven Caple Jr. of Creed II fame will direct.

All in all, the modern-day, live-action Transformers franchise owes its success to Michael Bay. While Bay won’t be directing (see above), he will still be present as an Executive Producer via his Bay Films. Steven Spielberg, too, is on as an EP. Hasbro, the company that originated the line of Transformers toys, will consult as they have with previous films.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will hit theaters on June 24, 2022. Fans are no doubt eager to see the blockbuster property return to theaters – especially with Sons of Anarchy‘s Ron Perlman leading the charge. The last Transformers film seen in theaters was Bumblebee, which hit two years prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic’s shut-down of theaters in 2018.

Get ready to rumble!
