‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’: Don Cheadle Says Michael Jordan Is Going to Be in the Movie

Space Jam, one of the most iconic sports movies ever, is finally getting its sequel. And the marquee man of the original is making a return.

Space Jam: A New Legacy has been in the works for quite some time. A sequel to the original was considered very quickly after the global success of the original, but it never made it to fruition.

That is until 2021. 25 years after the original crushed box office sales with $250.2 million worldwide, we’re finally getting the follow-up. However, Space Jam: A New Legacy features LeBron James as the leading role, rather than Michael Jordan.

But new words from Don Cheadle appears to say that MJ isn’t completely omitted from the new film. Cheadle is playing a villain in the film, Al-G Rhythm. Further, he says that Michael Jordan’s appearance may not be what you expect.

In the interview with Access Hollywood, host Sibley Scoles expressed her excitement for more Space Jam. She asked Cheadle about the potential of MJ getting screentime.

“Michael Jordan is in the movie,” Cheadle responded. “But not in the way you’d expect it.”

It’s a brief answer with a ton of room for speculation and interpretation. But, either way, one of basketball’s all-time greats will be there.

What to Know About Space Jam: A New Legacy

So, with the bombshell of Michael Jordan being confirmed for Space Jam: A New Legacy behind us, what else is there to know?

For one, it’s worth mentioning that LeBron James’ family will be portrayed by actors. Further, his wife in real life, Savannah Brinson, won’t be in the film as a character, with Sonequa Martin-Green instead portraying “Lamiyah James.” Instead of their real identities, his kids will be characters Dominic, Darius and Xosha.

The primary villains, the “Goon Squad,” feature big names from the NBA. Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson will play “Wet-fire,” LeBron’s Los Angeles Lakers teammate Anthony Davis will voice “The Brow,” and Portland Trailblazers star Damian Lillard will play “Chronos.”

The film will release on July 16.
