Talk to Me, Goose: Tom Cruise Chats With SpaceX Astronauts as They Orbit Earth

by Suzanne Halliburton

The passengers on Inspiration4 are having a terrific time in space. How many times does a cool trip come with a conversation with Tom Cruise?

The Twitter account of Inspiration4 posted this to update everyone about how they’re spending their day. The account tagged Tom Cruise, while making a Top Gun reference. Because any time is a good time to mention Maverick.

“Rook, Nova, Hanks, and Leo spoke to Tom Cruise sharing their experience from space. Maverick, you can be our wingman anytime.”

Tom Cruise Conversation Kept Classified

Fox News reported that the first-ever space tourists talked to Tom Cruise Thursday night. The four showed Cruise what it was like to be flying 360 miles above Earth. But, no details of the conversation were revealed.

We’re thinking Maverick would say: “It’s classified. I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.”

Fox News also reported that NASA confirmed it was in talks with Tom Cruise about making a stop at the International Space Station for any of his movies. In the deal, Elon Musk’s SpaceX would give Cruise and crew the initial ride. SpaceX has done that with NASA astronauts. And it’s what it did for the space tourists.

SpaceX launched Inspiration4, Wednesday night, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. It’s soaring higher than most NASA flights. And it’s 100 miles higher than the International Space Station. So it’s able to do 15 loops of Earth per day, as opposed to the typical 16. For context, you probably have seen the beautiful photos the Hubble Space Telescope takes of Earth. Inspiration4 is about as high as the Hubble telescope. Elon Musk tweeted that Inspiration4 is moving at at about 23 times the speed of sound and is circling Earth every 90 minutes

Issacman Is Billionaire Who Paid for Trip

The Inspiration4 crew of Jared Issacman, Hayley Arceneaux, Sian Proctor and Chris Sembroski trained for six months for the flight. Issacman is the billionaire who paid for the flight. Onboard computer systems are doing a lot of the work, while SpaceX teams are in control on the ground.

The passengers also are talking to a variety of significant people. They had a conversation with patients at St. Jude’s Research Hospital. Arceneaux now works for the hospital. As a child, she overcame bone cancer. The crew is trying to raise money for the hospital.

And Tom Cruise isn’t the only celebrity on their schedule. The four also spoke with Bono. Plus, the four got to ring the bell for the New York Stock Exchange.

Following this mission, there’ll be two other private trips to the International Space Station. There will be one in October and another in early January.

Inspiration4 returns to Earth tonight. They’re expected to make splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean somewhere off the coast of Florida.
