15-year-old Carter Rubin, of team Gwen Stefani, wins the 19th season of The Voice last night.

For the final episode of the season, it was Team Blake Shelton vs. Team Gwen Stefani as their singers, finalists Jim Ranger and Carter Rubin, battled it out.

During the finale, Rubin performed an impressive cover of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” and an original single, “Up From Here.” Additionally, he teamed up with Stefani for a holiday duet, “You Make It Feel Like Christmas.”

Unable to deny Rubin’s talents and “shimmering” stage presence, the show crowned Rubin winner of The Voice.

Gwen Stefani Was Initially Shocked By Rubin’s Appearance

During the blind auditions at the beginning of the season, Rubin wowed both coaches and audiences with his cover of Lewis Capaldi’s hit song, “Before You Go.” Coaches John Legend and Stefani both turned around for the singer.

However, Rubin was not what any of the coaches expected. The powerful voice they heard did not seem to match the 15-year-old boy from Long Island, New York standing in front of them.

“You do not look like your voice, okay. Just so you know,” said Stefani laughing.

Shelton also joked, “Where is the person who was singing?”

Despite his age, all coaches agreed that Rubin had undeniable talent.

“You’re the youngest person I’ve ever turned for on this show, said Legend. “…Your tone is piercing and brilliant. It just shimmers out there,” continued Legend.

However, Stefani ultimately snagged Rubin as a member of her team after assuring him that she can help him develop an identity for himself on the stage. Something, Rubin says, Stefani absolutely did during their season together.

“She’s not only an excellent coach, but she’s an excellent human, ” says Rubin. “She’s good at calming nerves and she’s given me such great advice as a singer. I’m so grateful to have her in my corner. She’s really helped me connect with my identity as an artist.”

Rubin Thanks His Family

Rubin says that it’s because of his family’s support that he was able to not only compete but also win The Voice.

“My family is the most supportive people I could have,” Rubin says. “They really want the best for me. They are the type of people who will drop everything to help me achieve my dreams,” he continues.

Although his parents aren’t musical, Carter says that his grandfather has been singing his whole life. “It kind of skipped a generation…Sorry, mom,” Carter jokes.

Along with bragging rights, as the champion of the singing competition, Rubin also won a $100,000 grand prize, a recording contract with Universal Music Group, and a trip for two to Universal Studios.
