Actor Cary Elwes and Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz are battling it out on Twitter.
While fans may be familiar with Elwes’ dueling skills from his leading role on The Princess Bride, this online feud is something we rarely get to see.
However, we’re sure it didn’t keep users from getting themselves a bag of popcorn and watching the online duel unfold.
On Wednesday, the British actor and senator took to Twitter to throw jabs at each other. The pair have been engaged in an online battle with one another since last year.
“@tedcruz How does it feel to know that not only the entire cast and crew of your favorite movie The Princess Bride, but almost the whole entertainment industry, have nothing but rabid contempt for you? #inconceivable?” tweeted Elwes.
“I think not, you miserable ROUS,” the 58-year-old actor added.
Fans of the classic comedy may be familiar with the term “ROUS,” which stands for “rodents of unusual size.”
Elwes’ tweet came after Cruz made a statement on his podcast “Verdict with Ted Cruz.”
“Have you noticed in how many movies how often rabid environmentalists are the bad guys,” said the former presidential candidate. “Whether it’s Thanos or go to ‘Watchmen.’ The view of the Left is people are a disease.”
Ted Cruz Gets In Heated Online Argument With Elwes
Ironically, Cruz is a huge fan of the beloved movie and is even known for reciting entire film scenes— making this for quite the awkward online interaction.
Despite this, Cruz fired back by tweeting at him Cruz an autographed photo of the actor wearing his Westley costume.
“Does this mean you want your picture back?” Cruz asked.
“Inconceivable,” Elwes retorted, obviously stunned by Cruz’s response.
Back in September, the film’s stars, including Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shaw, and Christopher Guest, came together for a virtual table read to benefit the Wisconsin Democratic Party and Joe Biden’s presidential run. The event raised $4.3 million.
The senator later posted a screenshot of Elwes’s tweet announcing the event and wasn’t afraid to be vocal about his disdain for the reunion.
He also added that he hoped the movie could be kept from “Hollywood politics.”
He even used quotes from the movie to make his point.
“Do you hear that Fezzik? That is the sound of ultimate suffering,” Cruz fired back. “My heart made that sound when the six-fingered man killed my father. Every Princess Bride fan who wants to see that perfect movie preserved from Hollywood politics makes it now.”
