It took some time but eventually, Sheriff Andy Taylor found the woman fans had been hoping for. That character’s name was Helen Crump and she was played by actress Aneta Corsaut.
The MeTV.com article also reports that Andy Griffith and Corsaut got along very well off screen. The two actors reportedly had a romantic relationship. This, of course, helped them develop chemistry on screen.
Years After She Played Sheriff Andy Taylor’s Love Interest, Actress Aneta Corsaut Appeared on ‘Matlock’
After she concluded her time playing Helen Crump alongside Andy Griffith, Aneta Corsaut played other roles on television series during the decade of the 1970s. She appeared on the show “Adam-12” as well as on the show “Emergency!” Corsaut also added work on “House Calls” to her resume after she left Mayberry.
Although, she did return to the beloved smalltown during 1986 when she again played Helen Crump in the television film “Return to Mayberry.”
However, this would not be the last time Corsaut worked alongside Andy Griffith. She also appeared on his show “Matlock.” According to MeTV.com, she played Judge Cynthia Justin on the legal drama. Corsaut reportedly appeared on four episodes.

Andy Taylor Originally Had Another Love Interest on ‘The Andy Griffith Show’
Before Andy Taylor fell in love with teacher Helen Crump, he had a relationship with a character known as Ellie Walker. According to the MeTV.com article, Walker was a pharmacist in Mayberry – the town where “The Andy Griffith Show” took place.
However, the article reports that the romance between Andy Taylor and Ellie Walker did not go on as planned by the show’s producers. The reason? Actors Andy Griffith and Elinor Donahue, who played Ellie Walker, just couldn’t make things work between them the way producers hoped they would.
MeTV.com has reported that it was Walker who wanted to leave the show. “I didn’t feel I was doing my best,” the actress reportedly said. “It was not my best work.”
After the relationship between Andy Taylor and Ellie Walker came to an end, the Mayberry sheriff had a few other relationships before Helen Crump came into his life.
