Luckily for its fans, when “The Andy Griffith Show” aired its final episode it was not the last time they got to visit Mayberry. The beloved fictional North Carolina small town came to life once again with the aptly-named spinoff, “Mayberry R.F.D.”
“The Andy Griffith Show” originally aired from 1960 until 1968. “Mayberry R.F.D.” began its three-year television run in 1968. Its premise was that it allowed fans to follow the lives of the other citizens of Mayberry.
However, there were some stars of the original show who appeared in the spinoff. One of them was Sheriff Andy Taylor himself. This loved and respected character was played by the loved and respected actor, Andy Griffith.
Here’s some trivia for you that might come in useful one day. Out of the 78 episodes of “Mayberry R.F.D.” Sheriff Andy Taylor appeared in only five of them. Four of these debuted in 1968, the other came in 1969.
The 1968 episodes were: “Andy and Helen Get Married,” “Help on the Farm,” “Youth Takes Over,” and “Mike’s Losing Streak.” The 1969 episode was titled, “Andy’s Baby.”

In addition to Sheriff Andy Taylor, another beloved character from “The Andy Griffith Show” also appeared in episodes of “Mayberry R.F.D.” That character was Aunt Bee Taylor. This kind, gentle, and loving woman was played by Frances Bavier. Aunt Bee Taylor appeared in 36 episodes, which is almost half of the total number of the spinoff. These episodes aired from 1968 until 1971.
Other characters that made the jump from “The Andy Griffith Show” to “Mayberry R.F.D.” were Opie Taylor and Goober Pyle. Opie, who was played by Ron Howard, only made one appearance in the spinoff. Unsurprisingly, this was one of the episodes that also included Sheriff Andy Taylor. It was the episode, “Andy and Helen Get Married.”
The popular character of Deputy Barney Fife also made one stop on “Mayberry R.F.D.” As played by Don Knotts, Barney was also in the 1968 episode “Andy and Helen Get Married.”
The funny character of Goober Pyle from “The Andy Griffith Show” was a regular on the spinoff. The character was played again by George Lindsey in “Mayberry R.F.D.” Lindsey played Pyle in all 78 episodes of the spinoff.
Leading the cast of “Mayberry R.F.D.” was actor Ken Berry. He played the character of Sam Jones in every episode of the spinoff. Berry was not a stranger to sitcoms during his career. He is also known for his work as the same character in “The Andy Griffith Show,” as well as his work in “F Troop,” “Love, American Style,” “Fantasy Island,” and “Mama’s Family.”
