‘The Brady Bunch’: Why One Cast Member Compared Themselves to Haley Joel Osment in ‘Sixth Sense’

by Quentin Blount

There was one cast member from The Brady Bunch who explained what life was like growing up as a child actor on the classic show.

We all remember Robbie Rist for playing the adorable role of Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch. As the rest of The Brady Bunch children got older, everyone enjoyed seeing the cute, young Cousin Oliver. Rist played the little guy during the last six episodes of the series.

But despite the short stint, his part on the show was memorable. So much so that people still recognize him to this day as the nine-year-old boy.

During an interview back in 2009 interview, the former child star spoke about how his time on the iconic TV show sometimes takes on a life of its own. He even goes on to compare himself to Haley Joel Osment’s character from The Sixth Sense.

“It takes on a life of its own,” Rist told Pop Entertainment. He was talking about The Brady Bunch phenomenon and playing Cousin Oliver. “It finds its own people. Then those people kind of bring it back to me. When people meet me, they still see that nine-year-old head on this forty-five-year-old body. Because it’s so fresh in their memory.”

He then compared the phenomenon to that of a similar child actor — Haley Joel Osment. Osment is well known for playing a young child in The Sixth Sense who can talk to the dead.

“And the art itself, which has nothing to do with me, has meaning to them,” Rist explained during the sit-down. “I’m basically Haley Joel Osment and they’re all ghosts. They always wanted to say something to me.”

‘The Brady Bunch’ Actor Robbie Rist Acting Career

In addition to being known for playing cute and lovable Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch, Robbie Rist went on to have quite an impressive career in the film and television industry.

Rist is without a doubt best recognized for his Cousin Oliver performance. But his role as Martin in Grady comes in a close second place. Further, Rist has also known for voicing various characters in television shows. Some of those include voicing Stuffy, the stuffed dragon in Doc McStuffins, Whiz in Kidd Video, Star in Balto, Choji Akimich in Naruto, and Michelangelo in the popular 1990 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

But despite all of his various successes, Rist says that he is still recognized the most for the short time he spent playing Cousin Oliver.
