The Brady Bunch star Christopher Knight is growing a mustache for Movember, a charity devoted to improving men’s health. Movember funds health projects related to suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer, and it’s urging men to grow mustaches and raise money to boost men’s health.
“Throwback mustache moments, can’t beat them!” Knight posted to Instagram on Thursday, alongside photos of himself and former co-star Barry Williams with mustaches. “Who wore it better then and who will wear it better now? The anticipation of the Movember Mustache-off challenge is still in the works! Let’s show support this @movember and encourage men to take action to live happier, healthier, longer lives.”
The Brady Bunch Star’s Charity of Choice Is Raising Awareness About Serious Problems
Movember is tackling some serious issues with its whimsical charity campaigns. Take suicide prevention, for example. In the Americas, men make up roughly 75 percent of completed suicides, according to Psychology Today. In the U.S., that works out to about 35,000 men a year who pass away by suicide.
What’s more, the male suicide rate is climbing after a period of descent. It ticked up by 2 percent each year between 2006 and 2017. And from 1999 to today, there’s been a cumulative 26 percent jump in male suicides. The men most at risk of successful suicides are divorced men, military veterans, unemployed men, Aboriginal men and men with mental health struggles.
Meanwhile, prostate cancer is the most common cancer striking men in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data show that while new prostate cancer cases have declined since 1999, prostate cancer rates remain high. In 2018, the last year for which data are available, the rate of new prostate cancer cases was 107.5 per 100,000 men, or a total of 211,893 U.S. cases.
As for testicular cancer, it is comparatively rare. Still, according to the Mayo Clinic, it is the most common cancer among the 15- to 35-year-old demographic. It is usually treatable, but doctors have to catch it first, so regular doctor visits are important.
Christopher Knight Joins Former Castmates in New Holiday Movie
Meanwhile, Knight has been busy rejuvenating his acting career. The Brady Bunch star recently appeared alongside Williams, Mike Lookinland and Susan Olsen in the new Lifetime movie Blending Christmas.
The movie stars Haylie Duff and Aaron O’Connell, two sweethearts who try to bring their big, loud families together for Christmas, per People. The Brady Bunch stars play some of the family members in question.
The families’ bickering forces the couple to question the foundation of their relationship, and threatens to derail O’Connell’s character’s plans to propose. But whatever happens, for Brady Bunch fans, it will no doubt be nice to see some familiar faces appearing in family-friendly holiday fare.
