‘The Brady Bunch’: One Actor Explained Why the World Thinks Cast is ‘Dead’

by Suzanne Halliburton

For The Brady Bunch stars, decades have made them nearly non-existent in the public realm. Or, that’s at least what’s happened to one of the middle children.

Think about it, the six child stars of The Brady Bunch, which ran from 1969-74, didn’t grow up with the internet. There was no social media, no 24-hour cable networks. If you didn’t have a good public relations person, it was pretty easy to go radio silent, voluntary or otherwise.

Eve Plumb, who starred as Jan Brady, explained this in an interview with the Washington Post in 2000.

“It’s funny,” Plumb said. “Unless you’re on the evening news every night, they think you’re dead.”

The Post reported that Plumb deadpanned the first remark. Then The Brady Bunch star who spawned a thousand memes continued.

“I just haven’t been in the public eye every breath I take. I’ve chosen to live my life as normally as possible. I don’t have a rags-to-riches story. I’m not sensational. It’s not like I’ve had to pull myself out of the gutter, or pull myself from the dead.”

And that basically says it all.

Post Brady Bunch, Eve Plumb Found Her Acting Career Slowed Down as She Got Older

Plumb now is 62. Her acting career slowed the older she got. Immediately, post Brady Bunch, she did OK. She played a teen-aged prostitute in Dawn: Portrait of a Teenage Runaway. And she was Elizabeth in the Little Women mini-series.

But mostly, later in her career, her best acting jobs were playing Jan Brady, a part she brought to life in 1969, when she was 11 and already a child star veteran.

Plumb recently moved to New York, although she splits her time between there and Los Angeles. In 2016, she sold her Malibu beach house. It was one of her first big purchases when she first was on the Brady Bunch. When she was 11, she paid $55,000 for the beachfront property. In 2016, Plumb sold it for almost $4 million. Now, that’s a terrific investment.

Plumb also became an artist in her post Brady Bunch life. On her Instagram account, she promotes her business, PlumbGoods. She’s pushing reasonably-priced items with a daisy motif. Similar designs were popular back in the early days of The Brady Bunch. Everyone remembers flower power. Now, you can buy dog bowls to bandanas to throw pillows and shower curtains featuring a vintage, flower power look.

Meanwhile, the cast reunited for the reality show A Very Brady Renovation on HGTV. The TV family renovated their TV house.

Artsy Eve Plumb also earned an HGTV pilot called Generation Renovation. It seems it still pays to be Jan Brady, even if you’re not on the evening news every night.
