Charlie Daniels Jr. shared a story about Eddie Van Halen and lamented the loss of another musical legend in 2020. The guitar legend Van Halen died Tuesday following a long battle with cancer, his son tweeted.
Charlie Daniels Jr. posted to his condolences to his father’s Twitter page.
“I don’t know if dad ever got to meet him, but I got to go backstage to a @VanHalen show in 1986 or 1987 on the 5150 Tour. He will be sorely missed. 2020 has been a helluva year for losses in the music industry. RIP Eddie Van Halen. – CD, Jr. #RIPEddieVanHalen.” he wrote.
Charlie Daniels died earlier this summer. He was 83.
Eddie Van Halen’s son and Van Halen bass player Wolfgang Van Halen announced the death of his father on Twitter Tuesday. “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.
“My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss,” he added. “I love you so much, Pop.”
Eddie Van Halen was 65 at the time of his passing.
Tributes pour in for guitar god Van Halen
Eddie Van Halen was a beloved figure in rock and roll music. He’s considered one of the greatest — if not the greatest — living guitarist of the 1980s. Tributes have been coming in from the music world and elsewhere from fans and friends alike.
KISS bassist Gene Simmons called Van Halen a “beautiful soul” in his post for the rocker. “My heart is broken. Eddie was not only a Guitar God but a genuinely beautiful soul. Rest in peace, Eddie!” Simmons tweeted.
Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Lommi said he was devastated to lose his friend. “I’m just devastated to hear the news of the passing of my dear friend Eddie Van Halen. He fought a long and hard battle with his cancer right to the very end. Eddie was one of a very special kind of person, a really great friend. Rest In Peace my dear friend till we meet again.” he wrote.
Rock critic Steve Hyden tweeted his condolences. He said calling Van Halen a guitar virtuoso wasn’t enough. He was a “wizard.”
“Terrible news about the death of Eddie Van Halen. He’s known as a virtuoso, but guitar virtuosos rarely make records that are so much damn fun. The first six Van Halen LPs are about as joyous as hard rock gets. He’s more than a musician, he’s a goddamn wizard. RIP,” he wrote.
Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea wrote that hoped Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix were able to jam now. “Oh man, bless his beautiful creative heart. I love you Eddie Van Halen, an LA boy, a true rocker. I hope you jam with Jimi tonight. Breakthrough to the other side my brother,” he posted.
