Despite COVID-19 delays, The Conners rushed production to cover the 2020 election. The TV show will have a Halloween/election special. The episode will air a week before viewers vote on Nov. 3.

“As far as the election and all that, we didn’t know exactly what our airdates would be for a while. Because everyone was trying to figure that out,” show-runner Bruce Helford told The Wrap. “But once we found out that we were going to be on the air on Oct. 28, we rushed into production to do an episode that discusses Halloween. For one thing, because Halloween won’t be the same this year. So the Conners are going to find a way to make it right.”

Helford said he hopes to put viewers in the Halloween spirit with the episode. He also wants to show viewers how to celebrate the holiday during the pandemic. In regards to the election, the show will explore how divided the country is before the election.

“And we’re going to be discussing the polarization in America and what’s going on before the election,” Helford said. “So we’re going to be very much on top of all of it.”

The Conners will return for its third season at the end of October.

According to The Wrap, The Conners also focused on the 2020 election in season 2. The sitcom performed a live episode during the New Hampshire primary, incorporating ABC News’ real-time coverage. The cast performed the episode live for both the East and the West coasts.

The show stars John Goodman as Dan Conner, the patriarch of the family, and Sarah Gilbert as his daughter Darlene. The show is a sequel spin-off of the 1990s sitcom Roseanne. The network fired Roseanne Barr, the star of that sitcom, for racist tweets she made, just one season into a revival. The network revamped the show into The Conners, which explores the Conner family after their matriarch’s death.

The third season will debut on Oct. 21 at 9/8c on ABC. The Halloween/election-themed special will air the following week on Oct. 28, as the second episode of the season.
