In light of iconic actor George Segal’s passing, how will ABC handle the legacy of his beloved ‘Pops’ character? According to series star Wendi McLendon-Covey, there’s only one option.
The world lost a Hollywood icon last month as George Segal, known to modern audiences as ‘Pops’ on ABC’s hit, ‘The Goldbergs,’ passed away at 87.
Segal died due to complications from bypass surgery, his wife, Sonia, released in a statement. Wednesday night, the late star’s final ‘Goldbergs’ episode will air, alongside a special tribute. Fans are wondering, however, with Pops such a huge part of the show – will ABC continue his story by recasting for Season 9?
Not only is Pops future up in the air, but ‘The Goldbergs’ at large, as well. According to PopCulture.com, ABC has yet to make any plans for a Season 9. Thankfully, series star Wendi McLendon-Covey took to Twitter this week to lend clarity to this tragic situation.
“I will be live-tweeting tomorrow night’s ep., so I hope all you Goldnerds will join me. And it’s important to note that tomorrow night is George’s last episode, not the last episode of the season,” McLendon-Covey said Tuesday of the last episode Segal filmed before his passing.
Following this statement, she then clarified the question on everyone’s mind:
“And no, we would NEVER replace George in the role of Pops,” she continued. “If we get a season 9, we will address it then.”
How to Watch George Segal’s Final Episode of ‘The Goldbergs’
Any fan of ABC’s hit, or Segal’s incredible six-decade-long career, should be able to watch his last episode of ‘The Goldbergs’ with a little finagling.
His last appearance comes Wednesday, April 7, in Season 8’s ‘Couple Off’ episode. This entry was, as with the last string of George Segal’s appearances, prerecorded. To watch, fans can tune into ABC via their cable provider at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT. Viewers can also live stream “Couple Off” on ABC.com/watch-live.
In addition, ‘The Goldbergs’ episode will be available on ABC’s app. This does, however, require a cable provider login to view.
If you don’t have cable, fans can watch “Couple Off” Wednesday night on Hulu + Live TV, fuboTV, or YouTube TV. Each provider has a “free trial” you can sign up for to watch the episode.
Within, a special tribute to George Segal will air alongside his final ‘Goldbergs’ entry. Watch ABC’s trailer for their tribute episode below, which the network clarifies will have a “45-second tribute to Segal”:
