‘The Golden Girls’: Betty White’s Secret to a Long and Happy Life is Junk Food

by Josh Lanier

Betty White can work as hard as someone a quarter of her age because she eats like someone a quarter of her age. The 99-year-old Golden Girls scarfs down candy on set like a kid the day after Halloween, her co-stars once said.

“She eats crap,” her former Hot in Cleveland co-star Jane Leeves told UsMagazine.com in 2011. “She eats Red Vines, hot dogs, French fries, and Diet Coke. If that’s key, maybe she’s preserved because of all the preservatives.”

White’s love of sweets is no secret. She even did a famous Super Bowl ad for Snickers in 2010 that was one of the highlights of that year’s crops of advertisements. And her love of Red Vines is so legendary that the company made a portrait of her using only the licorice sticks for her birthday. You can see it here.

Another cast member, Wendie Malick, said the former Golden Girls star “eats red licorice, like, ridiculously a lot. She seems to exist on hot dogs and French fries.”

So there you have it. If you want to live and work well into your winter years, hit the candy aisle hard whenever you’re shopping. Also, don’t take medical advice from Outsider.com.

White, though, sees its differently. She believes her success comes from her tenacity and her endless work ethic.

Her tip for young people trying to remain relevant is to stay smart. “Be a professional and appreciate the business you’re in,” she said. “Everybody all over the world would love to be in your business, so don’t abuse it!”

Betty White Prescribes Positive Thinking, Vodka

Just before her 96th birthday, Betty White told Parade Magazine that her two favorite things were hotdogs and vodka.

But she added that the true secret to living a happy, long life is actually internal. And has nothing to do with your favorite licorice. Just be happy and live a life that will help bring you joy.

“Enjoy life,” White told Parade. “Accentuate the positive, not the negative. It sounds so trite, but a lot of people will pick out something to complain about, rather than say, ‘Hey, that was great!’ It’s not hard to find great stuff if you look.”

She added that you should drop the people in your life that want to pull you down.

“I know it sounds corny, but I try to see the funny side and the upside, not the downside,” The Golden Girls star said. “I get bored with people who complain about this or that. It’s such a waste of time.”
