‘The Partridge Family’: Why David Cassidy Called Early Career Choice ‘Most Significant’ Life Decision

by Will Shepard

At the beginning of David Cassidy’s career, he was just another actor trying to find his way in life. The Partridge Family gave him his big break. Before the show, he was like a lot of people, living on a paycheck to paycheck basis. He was trying to make it work in Broadway.

It was his stepmother, Shirley Page, who was able to help him change his fortunes, giving him the role of Keith Partridge in The Partridge Family. But that wasn’t until 1970 when he was 20 years old.

After graduating high school in Los Angeles in 1968, he was allowed to move out of his parent’s house. Even though he was battling serious addiction issues, he moved to Irvington, New York. The house he was living in there was a rental house that his dad and step-mother owned. The soon-to-be star of The Partridge Family was living there with his half-brothers.

But this wasn’t an ideal situation for him, and he knew that a change was necessary. Cassidy was still young but at an age where he needed to be supporting himself. So, he decided that a move to New York was the appropriate step to take in his life. Broadway was calling his name and he was going to answer that.

‘The Partridge Family’ Star, David Cassidy, Explains How Difficult Moving to Los Angeles Was

In an interview with Lohud before his death, he explains that the move was incredibly difficult. Uprooting his life for a relatively unknown place was certainly challenging for him. The Partridge Family star explains just how challenging the move was.

“Moving to Irvington from Los Angeles in 1968 was the most significant and dramatic life change I had ever made, and it still is to this day. I would take the train back and forth every day and work from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the afternoon I’d study in classes and go on auditions. Then I landed my first Broadway professional job and couldn’t commute all the way from Irvington because I had to be in Manhattan so early and leave so late.”

Nonetheless, the move for The Partridge Family actor would prove to be the right decision. Just two years after moving, he found himself in one of the biggest television shows in the world.
