‘The Partridge Family’ Star David Cassidy Revealed a Wild, Drunk New Years Eve with John Lennon

David Cassidy was a 1970s-era teen idol who was friends with other musical legends. “The Partridge Family” star even hung out with John Lennon, the Beatle who was true music royalty.

David Cassidy said he became friends with Lennon, post Beatles, and after Cassidy stopped playing a version of himself on the Partridge Family. They met while Lennon was recording “Rock n Roll,” Lennon’s sixth studio album.

Lennon released the album in 1975. The recording of it stretched for two years. Phil Spector, who produced albums for the Beatles and George Harrison as a solo artist, also produced this Lennon album.

David Cassidy Said He Spent New Year’s Eve With John Lennon

A reporter with the Phoenix News Times asked David Cassidy about John Lennon during an interview in 2012. Cassidy had been playing concerts at various casinos. He said of Lennon:

“He came to my house on New Year’s Eve and we got drunk and played Beatles songs. And I got to sing Paul (McCartney) parts. When you play in casinos, they don’t like you to tell stories so much, most times they say [brusquely] ‘Just play your songs.’

“So instead I just say ‘I was lucky enough to play Beatles songs with John Lennon till five in the morning and here was one we played.’ Keep it short. John and I became good friends when he was recording Rock and Roll so I was able to come down to the studio a couple of times and if you could imagine Phil Spector walking around with a f–king gun…It was nuts.”

David Cassidy portrayed Keith Partridge on “The Partridge Family” from 1971-74.

After his teen idol status cooled down, David Cassidy still made music with well-known performers. He recorded with the Beach Boys, collaborating with Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston on “Home Is Where the Heart Is.”

In 1985, George Michael and David Cassidy collaborated on “The Last Kiss”. Michael also sang backup for Cassidy’s “Romance.”

Cassidy tried to recreate his music magic. He still toured and did musical theater. He even competed on the NBC reality show “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2011. In August 2016, he did a concert at The Villages in Florida. It’s the largest retirement community in the country. Cassidy sang songs and did a Q and A. A ton of retirees probably had his Tiger Beat posters on their walls back in the day.

But later in life, David Cassidy was known most for tabloid headlines. He was arrested three times for DUI and also charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Cassidy died of multiple organ failures in November 2017. He was 67.
