‘The Power of the Dog’ Star Benedict Cumberbatch Refused to Speak to Co-Star Between Takes

With his new film The Power of the Dog set to premiere on Netflix next month, Benedict Cumberbatch reveals he refused to speak to his co-star Kirsten Dunst in between takes in order for both of them to get into character.

During his recent interview with NME, Cumberbatch stated he didn’t want to be really mean to Dunst, but he needed to stay in character. “So, I didn’t speak to her on-set. She was the same. We were the negative to each other’s positive. [We were] repelled by each other.”

According to IMDb, The Power of the Dog follows Cumberbatch’s charismatic rancher, Phil Burbank, who inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother George (Jesse Plemons) brings home his new wife Rose (Dunst) with her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love. 

Those starring alongside Cumberbatch, Dunst, and Plemons in The Power of the Dog are Kodi Smit-McPhee, Kenneth Radley, and Sean Keenan. The movie is set to premiere on December 1st through Netflix. 

‘The Power of the Dog’ Star Benedict Cumberbatch States He Would Like to Play Some Rock Stars 

While continuing to chat with NME, The Power of the Dog star Benedict Cumberbatch revealed some characters he’s interested in. “There are some rock stars I’d like to play. But I don’t think it’ll happen. And I’m not going to say who. You’ll have to guess.”

When asked if was the Radiohead boys, who he stated he is a fan of, Cumberbatch declared, “Oh I don’t think they want their lives made into a film. It would be quite a weird film. Love them as I do. No not at the time moment. But you know, we’ll see. Watch this space.”

While chatting about his role in 2019’s Brexit: The Uncivil War, Cumberbatch discussed what it was like to play a Dominic Cummings, who became a major political figure after Cumberbatch played him. “I have played a lot of people who have passed though. It’s an interesting theory, but I kind of like things to have their life in the moment. The last thing I want is for people to only watch the films when they kick it!”

The Power of the Dog star also discussed working alongside Nick Cave in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain. Cumberbatch plays Wain while Cave is sci-fi author H.G. Wells. “He’s the coolest man in the world. I worship him,” Cumberbatch declared. “Nick came up to me afterwards and asked, ‘Is this alriiiight? I don’t really know what I’m doinggg.’ I just told him to be himself.”
