‘The Talk’ Co-Host Elaine Welteroth Responds After Leaked Audio with Sharon Osbourne Surfaces

by John Jamison

In March, viewers of “The Talk” were rocked by the on-air disagreement between Sharon Osbourne and Sheryl Underwood. The debacle resulted in Sharon Osbourne leaving the show after being accused of racism. Now, backstage audio of her former co-host, Elaine Welteroth, is making its way around the internet.

Allegedly, the audio recording features a sympathetic Welteroth. She seems to be consoling a distressed Sharon Osbourne. The audio is from immediately following the argument.

The big deal people have now is with Elaine Welteroth’s behavior. Some think that the way she handled the situation was different in private. But “The Talk” co-host responded recently. And she says that she never changed her tune.

“My private comments made moments after the incident from a place of compassion to a then-colleague (the most senior level co-host on The Talk) were recorded —without my consent or knowledge—and shared with the media,” Welteroth wrote in a statement to Entertainment Tonight.

“I never filed a complaint with HR against Sharon Osbourne or anyone else. I am disheartened, however, that my kindness has been taken out of context and weaponized in an attempt to absolve responsibility for someone else’s actions.”

The statement includes more than is quoted here. But the gist is that Welteroth hasn’t said all that much on the issue since it went down in March. Since the leaked audio includes her, however, that’s no longer a workable policy. “The Talk” co-host said that she did not call Sharon Osbourne a racist in any context.

The March argument broke out following Osbourne’s support for her friend, Piers Morgan. He came under fire after he made what many saw as racist comments regarding the British royal family.

The Future of ‘The Talk’ and Its Co-Hosts

Fans of “The Talk” will have heard by now that “Stand By Me” actor Jerry O’Connell has joined the show as the newest replacement host.

He filled in as a guest host a few months ago. Now, he’s been called up to the big leagues. His addition to the show marks the first time that “The Talk” has ever had a full-time male co-host. And the current hosts are excited about their new colleague.

In fact, Elaine Welteroth ended her statement addressing the leaked audio with a brief welcome to her new co-host.

“I was honored to join ‘The Talk’ to add my voice to important and lively conversations. I am so excited about the next chapter with our new co-host Jerry O’Connell and I am grateful for the new perspectives he will bring to the show.”

The addition also helps the (hopefully) temporary absence of Carrie Ann Inaba. She is currently dealing with some health issues. And she needed some time away from the show.
