Country star and “The Voice” coach Blake Shelton cracked a surprising joke on Monday’s episode of “The Voice.”
The country singer quipped that his fiancée and fellow coach Gwen Stefani was away from the show because she was busy giving birth.
“She’s delivering twins right now,” Shelton said about Stefani. “She’s pushing them out, while I’m here working.”
Stefani departed the show in Season 20, making way for Nick Jonas to take over her chair on the panel.
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani Are Happily Engaged
Today, Shelton and Stefani are engaged. But as recently as 2014, when they first met on “The Voice,” they didn’t even know each other.
Shelton was somewhat starstruck when Stefani first showed up on the set of the show.
“She surprised everybody with a performance of ‘Hollaback Girl,’ and then they announced that she was going to be a coach,” Shelton recounted to People magazine. “I remember enjoying her performance, and then after the show, we all took a group picture. It was very much an industry-type meeting, and I told people, ‘I met Gwen Stefani. That’s crazy.’”
Flash forward to 2021, and now the couple are planning their wedding.
Shelton proposed last autumn at his ranch in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, where the couple and Stefani’s three sons had been quarantining during the pandemic. And for a week before he proposed, Shelton hid the engagement ring in the side pocket on the door of his truck, underneath spare change and McDonald’s salt packets.
“I knew that I needed to have the ring ready at any moment, and so I put it in the pocket of my truck. Because I didn’t want to set up the moment, I wanted her to accidentally set up the moment. And so I needed the ring available whenever that was,” Shelton told Extra recently.
For four or five days, he drove around with the ring in his truck, scared it might fall out. But when he finally did propose to Stefani, her reaction was worth the wait.
Shelton and Stefani Are Planning Around the Pandemic
Shelton later said that his memories of that day are kind of a blur, but he remembers Stefani’s oldest son Kingston confirming for her that she did actually say yes out loud.
As for when the wedding will happen, Shelton told Stephen Colbert that he would “marry Gwen in the morning,” but they’re dealing with the complications of planning a wedding during the pandemic.
“The truth is we want to be able to have, obviously, her parents there, my parents, our families,” Shelton said. “And, until that can happen we can’t even make a plan.”
“I think that we’re sort of just putting a target and date out there and seeing if we can work backward,” Stefani recently told ET Canada.
