Since 2011, “The Voice” has remained a beloved singing competition whose seen a wide variety of talented singers throughout the years. Much like the competitors, viewers have also seen different coaches take their seat on the coveted red chair.
Now, after only two seasons, Nick Jonas is leaving the show. Jonas was a coach alongside Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Blake Shelton throughout Seasons 18 and 20, yet he also took a brief, one-season hiatus.
Yet, he will not be returning to “The Voice” for its upcoming 21st season.
While he has yet to comment publicly on his decision, it may not have been entirely up to him. Former coach Gwen Stefani briefly returned to the coach’s seat following Nick’s first departure for Season 19.
Stefani was also a coach during seasons 7, 9, 12, and 17 and worked on seasons 8 and 10. She only missed 18 because the filming interfered with her Las Vegas residency.
Ariana Grande Booked to Replace Nick Jonas on ‘The Voice’
In March, it was announced that Ariana Grande would replace Jonas in the show’s 21st season. According to Page Six, the pop sensation has been a longtime fan of the show, and her team has been trying to land her a job as a coach for a while.
Yet, this won’t be the first time Granda has graced the stage. In 2016, Grande appeared on “The Voice” when she performed her song “Into You” during the finale.
“I’m so honored and excited to join ‘The Voice’ family!” Ariana said in a statement about her new coaching gig. “I can’t wait to go head-to-head with the incredible coaches, get to know these new artists and help to take their craft to the next level.”
“The Voice” Executive Vice President of Unscripted Content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming Jenny Groom also released a statement about Grande joining the cast.
“As an undeniable force in pop music, Ariana’s inimitable success in the music industry is extraordinary.” He added, “We were thrilled to learn that she is a true fan of The Voice and know that this enthusiasm will add to her impact as a dynamic coach.”
Although Jonas may be taking his leave from the show, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be out of “The Voice” spotlight for good.
“He isn’t leaving for good,” a source told Page Six. “Nick will remain on rotation with other stars that have appeared on the show. The chances are he will be back soon.”
Additionally, many former coaches who have appeared on “The Voice” have returned to the coaching gig throughout the years.
