‘The Voice’: Here’s Why Kelly Clarkson Didn’t Want to Sit Next to Blake Shelton

by Madison Miller

Amidst his finger-pointing, strangely entertaining dancing, and hilarious banter, Blake Shelton can be simultaneously the best and the worst coach to sit next to on “The Voice” stage.

Blake Shelton has been a coach on the singing competition since it first started in 2011. He celebrated 10 years on the show this year and is the last remaining original coach on the show.

Right now, he is situated next to Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Nick Jonas, who are the current coaches on the show. In terms of who he is right next to, that’s Nick Jonas.

Kelly Clarkson first made her appearance on the show back in season 14. She also happened to win that season with Brynn Cartelli. During that first season, she was situated next to Blake Shelton while Adam Levine and Alicia Keys were coaches as well.

Clarkson and Shelton are longtime friends even before their paths converged on “The Voice.” This meant a lot of friendly banter and bickering played a role. The two even made a bet when that season first started. If Clarkson won, Shelton would have to call her “Queen Kelly” next season. If Shelton won, he promised to make her “shut up for five minutes.”

Luckily, “Queen Kelly” won.

Then in season 15, the assigned seating had some revisions. Adam Levine and Blake Shelton sat on the ends. Then Clarkson sat directly next to Levine and Jennifer Hudson. The space between them at least forced the two to have to argue over other people, making it less consistent and ongoing.

“I don’t want to sit next to Blake. I’ve been with Blake for like over a decade. You’ve only had him for one season,” Clarkson joked with Hudson.

The sibling-like bickering just shows how close the two music icons are in reality. Blake Shelton expresses his affection through bickering and tough love, which was evident with Adam Levine as well. She may not want to sit right next to him, but it seems she enjoys her time on “The Voice” stage with Shelton.

The two have proven to be friends outside of “The Voice” stage. In fact, Shelton is one of the few people who has appeared on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” four different times.

In October 2020, she even gifted Blake Shelton a “Team Kelly” jacket, which is what she gives to members of her team on “The Voice.” She also gifted one to Jane Lynch, who has appeared on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” four times as well.

He also brought a gift onto the show. He had the “Wall of Champions” emerge from backstage. It is a list of celebrities he claims have beaten her in different games while appearing on her talk show. It includes people like Demi Lovato, Olivia Munn, Jennifer Garner, Henry Golding, Eugene Levy, Whitney Cummings, and others.

Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson have quite the friendly rivalry, even off “The Voice” stage.
