‘The Voice’: Watch John Legend Serenade First Team Member Christine with Hilarious Song

John Legend tweaked The Voice tradition of coaches giving their new team members special gifts.

Blake Shelton is handing out bobbleheads. Kelly Clarkson’s team receives a jacket. Nick Jonas has notebooks with his face on them. He keeps a notebook where he jots down thoughts about contestants and song suggestions. He had his team members a notebook on Monday night.

Then there’s John Legend and his gift. He said: “What’s interesting about my welcome gift, is it’s something they can’t take with them. There’s nothing physical about it. And it’s improvised.”

Christine Caine was the first singer to choose John Legend. And she was thrilled with Legend, as he sang his soulful, special song to her.

The Voice official Twitter account posted: “Imagine John Legend serenading you.”

Yes, please.

The Voice: Welcome to Team John Legend

On the spot, John Legend sang:

“You know I had to fight for you. Put it all on the line for you. Welcome to Team Legend. Welcome to Team Legend.

“You come from Pasadena, oh so nice to meet you. So welcome to Team Legend, oh, you’ve made your choice. Let’s go win The Voice. Welcome to Team Legend. Yeaaa.”

The Voice taped the blind auditions weeks ago. The show recently allowed the contestants to confirm their auditions on social media. Christine Cain sang “Watermelon Sugar,” a cover of the Harry Styles hit.

From her reaction, Cain loved the John Legend song. She smiled and started dancing. And why not? She was serenaded by someone with an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. The song is personalized and priceless.

The other coaches gave Legend all sorts of grief. In the middle of the song, Blake Shelton said “that’s a long song.”

Then as the ditty reached the end, Kelly Clarkson harmonized with Legend:

“We get it.”

Obviously, the coaches want the eventual winner on their team. It’s a point of pride. Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton’s girlfriend, mentored last season’s winner, Carter Rubin.

Maelyn Jarmon won season 16 representing team John Legend. That’s his first and only win as a mentor.
