‘The Voice’ Sees Drop in Ratings as NCAA March Madness Continues

by Madison Miller

Like most years, the NCAA basketball tournament has racked in a huge number of viewers. It is dueling with other prime TV programs for the top spot in viewers and ratings.

“The Voice” is on top for viewers, but March Madness has higher ratings.

Ratings and Viewers March Madness and ‘The Voice’

TV Line reports that CBS coverage of two Elite Eight March Madness matchups had just below 6 million total viewers and a 1.5 demo rating.

Meanwhile, NBC’s “The Voice,” which consistently brings in a high number of viewers, saw a decrease this past Monday. The show had 6 million viewers and a 0.7 demo rating. This means they surpassed March Madness in viewers by just a fraction to get the night’s largest audience.

As the tournament progresses, “The Voice” may continue to see a slight dip in viewers as people battle between watching college basketball and the popular singing competition.

Last week was a similar story. March Madness had a higher demo rating for adults 18-49 (1.2 ratings), but “The Voice” had more viewers (6.8 million). The singing show has gone from a 0.9 to a 0.7 in just one week in ratings.

Another singing competition is also fighting for viewers on the Monday night time slot. “American Idol” took over “The Bachelor” time slot on March 23 on ABC. The show had only 4.8 million viewers and a 0.7 rating.

‘The Voice’ New Judge

Perhaps “The Voice” will see a change in viewers and ratings next season as well. It was recently announced that pop singing sensation Ariana Grande will be replacing Nick Jonas for season 21 of the show.

According to Page Six, she will be judging and coaching contestants alongside Blake Shelton, John Legend, and Kelly Clarkson.

“Ariana is a huge fan of ‘The Voice’ and her management team has been negotiating to get her on the show for a while. She is replacing Nick Jonas, who is a [coach] on the current season, but he isn’t leaving for good. Nick will remain on rotation with other stars that have appeared on the show. The chances are he will be back soon,” a source told the news outlet.

Grande is definitely over-qualified to judge people’s singing performances. Recently her album “Positions” broke the record for the most songs to debut as No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. She is Spotify’s most-streamed female artist of the past decade.

Both Nick Jonas and Ariana Grande are popular pop artists as of now. The show is now split with two female coaches and two male coaches for the next season.
