‘The Voice’: Which Coaches Are Returning for Season 21?

Since its inception, NBC’s “The Voice” has seen its fair share of celebrity coaches from various backgrounds. From Miley Cyrus and Shakira to Usher and Adam Levine, fans of the long-running singing competition have seen a wide variety of faces come and go over the years.

When former coach Nick Jonas confirmed he wouldn’t be returning for season 21 of the show, it made fans wonder who would be stepping in his spot when the show comes back on the air in the fall of 2021. Jonas served as a judge on seasons 18 and 20.

So, this begs the question, which coaches are returning next season?

Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, and John Legend will all appear as judges during season 21, alongside pop star Ariana Grande, who will make her “Voice” debut.

This upcoming season of “The Voice” will mark Kelly Clarkson’s eighth time as coach and John Legend’s sixth. As for Blake, Shelton is the longest-running coach in the show’s history, appearing in all 21 seasons.

Pop Icon Joins ‘The Voice’ for Upcoming Season

Replacing Jonas next season, Ariana Granda first announced her involvement in the show back in March of 2021. The “Positions” singer announced the news via Instagram, revealing that she’s joining “The Voice” as a coach for the first time.

“Surprise !!! i am beyond thrilled, honored, excited to be joining @kellyclarkson @johnlegend @blakeshelton next season,” Grande wrote in the photo caption, adding, “@nickjonas we will miss you.”

The former boy-band member will finish the 20th season of the show before the pop icon takes his place.

Since announcing the news, every coach from “The Voice” has commented on Grande’s new gig. During a virtual Q&A session in April, Shelton revealed that he’s “excited” for Grande to join the show, adding, “It’s somebody new for me to beat.”

Shelton, one of the original judges, has coached seven winning contestants. John Legend, who also joined Shelton during the Q&A, said Grande is a perfect fit for the show.

“Part of the charm of the show is that we keep things exciting and bring different coaches on that will add a new flavor to the mix,” he added. “Ariana is one of the most gifted artists in our business today. She is a huge, chart-topping artist with amazing vocal skills.”

“American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson also said she’s also “excited” for Grande to join the squad. During a segment on her award-winning daytime talk show, Clarkson spoke about Grande’s upcoming debut, saying that she is her biggest competition.

“They said she was signing on, and I was like, ‘We’re all going to lose.’” Clarkson has been a longtime fan of Grande’s. She’s covered a handful of her songs, like “Imagine,” during her talk show’s segment, “Kellyoke.”
