For a while now, the actress has been sharing her memories from the beloved family show with fans online. She has covered a variety of topics – from the wardrobe, to talking about specific episodes, to guest stars. She titles these videos “Behind the Scenes of The Waltons.”
In a video posted on June 3, 2021, Judy Norton focused on the episode titled “The Return.” This episode was part of the show’s sixth season. And, it follows John Boy’s return to his family after going off to New York to become a writer. Once back at home on Walton’s Mountain, John Boy persuades Mr. Guthrie to open the coal mine.
But, the storyline in this episode of the series that Norton felt had a “wonderful element” centered around Grandpa Zeb Walton, who was played by Will Geer.
As recounted by Norton, during the episode grandpa encounters Nurse Nora. They talk about the people who live in the most rural parts of the community. She tells him that she is more concerned about their feelings of loneliness than she is about their physical health.
Special Part of ‘The Reunion’ Episode of ‘The Waltons’ Centered Around Grandpa Walton
Grandpa Walton being Grandpa Walton, he decides to do what he can to help those people.
“So, you see him once again riding Blue, this time in a saddle, and off he goes to visit people who are isolated up there in the backwoods,” Judy Norton recalled. “And, he finds himself very useful and very, very much needed up there in helping with the work and with raising the spirits of the people who live there.”
Unsurprisingly, Grandpa Walton’s work is a success.
“And, you see a real transformation with this one couple that he spends a lot of time with,” Norton explained. “He visits regularly and they come to anticipate and look forward to his visits for the company and the uplifting nature of just having somebody show up who cares.”
What Grandpa Walton does in this episode of the show is something Judy Norton said she believes we all should follow.
“And, it’s a great lesson, message to us about those on the outskirts for whatever reason, and the way in which us reaching out can make such a difference in their lives,” Norton said. “And, even simple things that we do can really help raise someone’s spirits. So, I thought that was just a wonderful element of this episode.”
