‘This Is Us’ To End After Sixth Season on NBC

by Anna Dunn

The NBC family drama This Is Us is set to end after its sixth season, but thankfully for the show’s cast and crew, this isn’t bad news. Creator Dan Fogelman had long planned to end the show with a sixth season. The upcoming ending of This is Us is one of those semi-rare instances where a show gets to end on its own terms.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will officially announce its final season on Friday. Friday is when NBC’s new execs, Frances Berwick and Susan Rovner, are set to release the upcoming schedule for the upcoming 2021-2022 season.

NBC renewed the show for three additional seasons in 2019. And in spite of hopeful NBC execs who hoped the show could last longer, it’s clear that this is where Fogelman and the writer’s room want the show to end. In 2019, Fogelman discussed the ending of This is Us with The Hollywood Reporter.

“We never set out to make a television series that was going to last 18 seasons, so we have a very direct plan,” he said. “I have script pages I have written and I’m writing that really are deep, deep, deep into the future. We have a plan for what we’re going to do, and I know what the plan is.”

The Drama Follows A Family Over Multiple Decades

For those who don’t know, the hit show follows a fairly close-knit family with a background full of tragedy. The four adult siblings that the show follows closely all lost their father in a house fire when they were young. But the show doesn’t stick to one timeline and frequently features flashback episodes (or even, in some cases, flash-forward).

The expansive and pliable timeline gives the show the ability to portray the lives of multiple family members, even after their passing, and explore different time periods. Multiple episodes, for instance, feature the father of the family fighting in the Vietnam War. The show is known for being quite the tear-jerker.

The final season will likely carry around eighteen episodes and carry the show over the 100 episode mark known in the industry to help with better off-network syndication deals.

‘This is Us’ Has Been a Ratings and Awards Powerhouse for NBC

This is Us was a hit before it even made it to air. Its trailer scored a record number of youtube views before its release. Upon release, This is Us maintained incredible ratings during an era where broadcast originals don’t typically draw in the viewers they used to. More and more people are opting out of their cable plans in favor of streaming.

This Is Us is likely one of the top-rated broadcast network shows amongst the 18-49 year old demographic. The demographic is incredibly important and difficult to maintain for networks.

But aside from the viewership, the show won in other ways. Just like with ratings, broadcast TV shows have struggled in awards shows. For This is Us? They crushed it. The show has been nominated for multiple Emmy awards and has had guest stars win. It was also nominated for the notoriously prestigious Peabody award.

This Is Us gets the opportunity to end naturally. The highly anticipated final season is sure to come with a few surprises. If you haven’t caught up on This Is Us, you can do so on Hulu or Peacock. One suggestion, though: Bring tissues.
