Comedy superstar John Ritter once opened up about what it was like to be a famous actor and new father during an interview in 1980.

Most creative people use paints and canvas or scripts and movie scenes to express their creativity. But not John Ritter. The acting star said that, after becoming a father, he realized that there really isn’t a more creative medium than procreation. During an interview in 1980, Ritter opened up about his fatherhood journey.

“I’m really thrilled,” said Ritter. “The idea of my wife having a little life inside really puts a perspective on my life and how film and television is something that is fun to do. But this is where the attention should go, on this new little creation. I feel like I want to be creative with my life. There’s nothing more creative than creating another life.”

Even with all the excitement, like a good dad, Ritter still had some nervousness about being a new father.

“I don’t want people trampling over my child, or him getting a lot of focus or privileges or attention or annoyances from people because of his father…or her father, who knows, I gotta watch that,” said Ritter.

John Ritter added that he planned to do the best he could every single day – and ask for forgiveness later.

“But I don’t know. I’m going to try to do it a day at a time and try not to make too many mistakes,” said Ritter. “And hopefully my kid will forgive me.”

Sadly, John Ritter died on September 11, 2003 due to heart issues.

John Ritter Once Joked That Orange Juice Was The Secret To His Upbeat Attitude

It’s no secret that throughout his decades-long career, John Ritter almost always portrayed an upbeat guy. Whether he was playing funny housemate Jack Tripper in Three’s Company, or a hilarious fake superhero in A Hero at Large, there was always something about John Ritter that just made audiences smile. During the same interview, the host asked Ritter what the secret was to his positivity.

“It’s all the orange juice I drink,” said Ritter smiling. “It’s so good for you. My blood sugar just hits.”

However, then Ritter got a bit more serious. He attributed his positive outlook on life to his parents.

“I really am positive,” said Ritter. “I think I got that from my mom and dad. My mom for example…from the ‘hi’ and the ‘goodnight,’ she’s just a sparkler. But I would be like a punk rock guy from The Deadboys or something like that compared to my mother who’s a skyrocket. I guess I reflect some of her positive energy. And I think I reflect some of my dad’s positive outlook on life too.”

Ritter then returned to his comedic roots and joked, “But I do have my moments where I’m a bit of a drag, I must say.”

Well, it’s nice to know that, just like all of us, John Ritter was in fact human and could sometimes be a bit of a “drag.”
