by Suzanne Halliburton

Bridget Moynahan, Tom Brady’s ex-girlfriend, has watched enough football to know it well. So she shared a story this week about Sarah Thomas, who became the first female ref to officiate a Super Bowl.

Thomas was the down judge Sunday as Tampa Bay beat Kansas City, 31-9, to win the Super Bowl. She was tasked with looking for pre-snap penalties like offsides or illegal procedure.

Moynahan’s ex, Tom Brady, is the quarterback for Tampa. He won his seventh championship, Sunday, at Raymond James Stadium. Moynahan, a co-star of “Blue Bloods,” and Brady were together from 2004-06 and share a son, Jack, who is 13.

Moynahan celebrated for her ex-boyfriend, who is married to supermodel Gisele Bundchen. She posted on Instagram: “I am pretty sure I am not the only one from #patriotsnation celebrating @buccaneers.”

Bridget Moynahan Celebrated Sarah Thomas

Meanwhile, Sarah Thomas was making the media rounds, Wednesday.

She appeared on CBS This Morning for an interview with Gayle King. She talked about the angel pin she wore on her uniform. Her mother had given it to her when she was a freshman in college. And then she told King about how she mentally motivated herself to prep for a ground-breaking assignment.

So her mother, “found that angel,” Thomas said. “And she pinned it on a little note and said, ‘We’re not going to be there with you in person, but we’re there with you in spirit. Will you pin this on your uniform somewhere? Then I listened to ‘Rise Up,’ that song…Every word from the start to the end is, I have chills now, and that got me emotional because I would do this 1,000 times again and rise up and do this over and over, and that song just has a lot of meaning to it.”

Sarah Thomas said her three children joined her on the field after the game. She’s mother to two sons, Brady and Bridley, and daughter, Bailey.

“Them being there, I think just gave me another sense of just calm,” Thomas said. “That they’re there. They’re safe. And I often say being the first in any of this is not what I set out to do, but being a mom first is what I am to do. So having them there and to share this with me, it was just unbelievable.”

The story Bridget Moynahan shared also mentioned other details about Sarah Thomas, including that she started officiating college football games in 2015.

Thomas’ assignment used to be called “head linesman.” But the NFL switched the name to down judge.
