by Jonathan Howard

Tom Hanks very well may be the most beloved actor of his generation. There are super fans for Hanks regarding all sorts of films from Forrest Gump to the Toy Story franchise, he has made quite a resume. Did you know he traditionally has used a 1992 Airstream as his home away from home? Well, even if you didn’t know that, you could have a chance to own it! Bonhams, a popular auction site for these sorts of things, has listed the Airstream owned by Hanks.

However, you aren’t just bidding on an Airstream, oh no. While generations of Americans and others have made their second homes on the road with the silver-bullet-looking trailers, Hanks’ trailer is really special. While speaking with Bonhams Magazine Hanks remarked on why he bought the Airstream in the first place.

“I got it in the days when movies moved slower. I had spent too much time in regular trailers…so I decided to buy a brand-new Airstream shell with an interior made to my own request.” The movie star realized quickly that he wanted and needed to be comfortable while on the road for work. The only things that were built in the trailer were the kitchen and bathroom. It had a desk and cupboard in the back with a futon and just enough room for a small table and some chairs. Hanks even got a couch with removable legs to fit it into the door.

This Airstream was used as a refuge on sets and during the production of various movies and films. It has gone with Tom Hanks from Sleeping in Seattle to the Beaufort, SC set of Forrest Gump, and just about anywhere else movies are filmed. The trailer also acted as a legitimate second home and retreat for Hanks and his family and friends.

Nowadays, the Airstream is packed with tons of dishes, glasses, a few espresso makers, and other kitchen appliances. Hanks even signed one of the A/C units. Hanks wrote, “You haven’t lived well until you survive a movie-stopping thunderstorm in an Airstream while on location in Carolina. But, more than anything, an Airstream is gorgeous and cozy, which is why everyone who visited mine went away wanting one.”

So, Hanks has gotten a ton from his Airstream is seems. With such a strong connection, this could be the most unique trailer on the market. Talk about a place having character, imagine the characters that have passed through the place. Truly a one-of-a-kind opportunity for someone who wants to make this their own. Forrest Gump’s ping pong paddle was auctioned off not too long ago.

There is no telling where the memorabilia comes from. Tom Hanks has filmed so much since 1992 and after 30-years is now parting with his second home. If you have around a quarter of a million dollars to spare, take a look at Tom Hanks’ Airstream.
