Tom Hanks is starring in a new western movie, but it’s not like the westerns of the olden days.
The award-winning actor shares some interesting details about “New of the World” in an interview with Entertainment Tonight Canada.
“What we’re going to be doing with this movie is contrary to an awful lot of the way that western movies work and that is all the problems are solved by gun play,” Hanks starts out saying. “Yes there is a clumsy kind of like gunfight that happens in this thing but it’s not particularly glamorous. It’s actually kind of like odd and happens almost by mistakes and the rest of it is about people engaging in what their lives are.”
The nontraditional movie focuses more on storytelling and the journey of trying to make it to tomorrow. Additionally, the motion picture honors Native Americans and includes the Kiowa Nation.

Tom Hanks is reuniting with writer and director Paul Greengrass. The two worked together on the 2013 Best Picture nominee “Captain Phillips”
Hanks plays the main character, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd. The movie is set five years after the end of the Civil War, and Captain Kidd now has a new job. He moves from town to two was a non-fiction storyteller, telling the news ranging on topics to presents, royalty, notorious feuds, catastrophes, and even amusing adventures from around the globe.
However, in Hanks’ journey, he comes across Johanna in Texas. She’s a 10-year-old that has been taken in by the Kiowa people. The story goes that Johanna was adopted six years prior by the Kiowa Nation but is now being forced to return to her biological aunt and uncle.
Kidd involves himself in the matter and agrees to take the child to where the law says she belongs. However, this journey isn’t going to be an easy one. The pair encounter enemies of both human and natural forces as they search for a place to call home.
“News of the World” will be in theaters this Christmas.
