Kenedi Anderson, a frontrunner on “American Idol,” dropped out of the competition earlier this week after making it into the Top 24. Anderson, a 17-year-old from Crozet, Virginia, performed in a pre-recorded show on Monday, April 11, singing “Human” by Christina Perri. She and 23 other hopefuls competed in the Aulani Disney Resort in Kapolei, Hawaii. They recorded their performances in mid-February, and they will return to the stage next Sunday, April 16, to see who advances to the next round.

But in between the February performance and last night’s airing, “American Idol” frontrunner Kenedi Anderson decided to drop out. The show aired her performance, but without displaying voting information. Afterward, per PopCulture, host Ryan Seacrest appeared on screen to deliver the shocking news.

“You might have noticed that there was no voting information during Kenedi’s performance just now. Since we taped these shows in Hawaii earlier, Kenedi has decided to withdraw from our show for personal reasons,” Seacrest shared. “We send her well wishes, and needless to say, we have incredible talent on this historic season, with more iconic Idol performances coming up for you right now.”

Fremantle Media, which produces “American Idol,” also released a statement about the frontrunner’s departure to PEOPLE. “We are disappointed to see Kenedi leave,” the statement read. “But we are excited to watch this celebratory 20th season unfold with the incredible talent vying to be the next ‘American Idol.'”

‘American Idol’ Frontrunner Kenedi Anderson Confirms Her Exit From Show

No further explanation or reasoning has emerged about frontrunner Kenedi Anderson’s exit from “American Idol” this week. But Anderson herself did take to Instagram to confirm Seacrest’s announcement after last night’s airing of the show. She posted a photo of her message in white text over a black box. The caption on the post just reads, “An update on ‘American Idol.'”

“For personal reasons, I’m unable to continue on American Idol,'” Anderson wrote in the text on the photo. “This has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, but I know it’s necessary.”

She added, “I’m so grateful to ‘American Idol,’ the judges, the producers, the amazing contestants, and all the fans who have supported me. Thank you for giving me such an amazing opportunity to share my voice, chase my dreams, feel so much joy and happiness doing what I love, and make lifelong friends along the way.”

While many fans are sad to see Anderson go, they also support her decision. Many expressed well wishes for Anderson, mimicking Seacrest’s words. Hopefully, Anderson can still see a bright future in the music industry. We know she definitely has the voice for it.
