During its many seasons on television, “Blue Bloods” has followed the Reagan family as they have faced challenging cases, controversial issues, and many other stressful situations. While these situations are typically very interesting for viewers, the relationships between the show’s characters are what keep people coming back season after season.

“Blue Bloods” follows the Reagans – a New York City family that has dedicated itself for generations to law enforcement and protecting their community. They are also dedicated to one another and their family dynamic is one of the best parts of the CBS series.

Of course, the Reagans interact with other characters. And, sometimes, these characters become love interests. One such example is when Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) became partners with Eddie Janko (Vanessa Ray) on the New York City Police Department. Their relationship turned romantic and the two characters are now married. Fans are also wondering if Jamie’s brother, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), and his NYPD partner, Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), will become an item.

One character who has remained mostly single throughout the first 11 seasons is Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck). He is the father of Danny, Jamie, and Erin (Bridget Moynahan). Frank is also the commissioner of the NYPD. As fans are aware, Frank’s wife, Mary, passed away before the series began.

Frank has dated during the course of the show, but no relationship has lasted. Fans are wondering if this could change during the show’s upcoming 12th season. Well, comments Tom Selleck once made on the subject might give fans a clue as to what the future holds for Frank. Selleck also serves as an executive producer on “Blue Bloods.”

Tom Selleck Said His ‘Blue Bloods’ Character Has ‘Wrapped Himself in His Work’

There are several factors that have kept Frank from a serious relationship, according to Tom Selleck.

“Frank’s a little senior. He’s also still wearing his wedding ring. We’ve never gone into it. Maybe it’s too self-centered a story about the why of all that. He’s pretty much wrapped himself in his work,” the 76-year-old told Parade.

Because of the type of person Frank is, the show has to handle giving him a serious relationship with care.

“The hardest thing about it is, especially with someone who is obviously as vulnerable as Frank and probably scared of relationships, you can’t just bring somebody on the show and do an episode about it. It takes a lot of planning,” Selleck also explained.

The “Blue Bloods” star also said that finding the right actress for the part is a key factor in such a storyline.

“He’s attracted to women all the time, but dating’s a different thing. I don’t know how you get to a date in one episode. They have to hire somebody who’s willing to, No. 1, make a leap of faith, like I did on ‘Friends’ — there was no script — and have a significant arc. That’s the only way to do it,” Selleck said.

The 12th season of “Blue Bloods” kicks off on Friday, Oct. 1. This season premiere episode will air at 10 p.m. (ET) on CBS. Fans will just have to tune in to see if there is romance in Frank Reagan’s future.
