‘Chicago PD’ Stars Jesse Lee Soffer and Tracy Spiridakos Break Down That Long-Awaited Moment

by Leanne Stahulak

“Chicago PD” kicked off Season 9 with tons of excitement last night, between Officer Kim Burgess surviving her gunshot wounds and Sergeant Hank Voight covering up a murder.

But the really exciting moments for some fans came when Officer Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) accepted Officer Hailey Upton’s (Tracy Spiridakos) marriage proposal. And he got down on one knee to return the favor because he’s “old-fashioned” like that.

Little did Halstead know that when Upton proposed, she was also trying to process the fact that she killed a suspect, who’d already been tortured by Voight. When Voight told her he’d handle it, he apparently meant he’d cover up any trace of his or Upton’s involvement. Which leaves her with the responsibility of keeping it all secret, including from her new fiance.

“Chicago PD” stars Soffer and Spiridakos talked with TVLine about that “long-awaited moment” between the two. Fans couldn’t believe when Season 8 ended with Upton putting that proposal out there, forcing viewers to wait until Season 9 to hear Halstead’s response. Here’s what the stars had to say.

‘Chicago PD’ Stars Soffer and Spiridakos Talk about Their Characters’ Engagement

In Soffer’s eyes, having Halstead accept the proposal and then turn it back towards Upton only reaffirms his commitment to her.

“It’s important to have that moment,” Soffer said. “Because even though the motivation on Hailey’s side is murky because she’s obviously going through such an emotional moment with what she did and the guilt and all that stuff, it’s real love between the two characters.”

He continued with, “I think for Jay to kind of take the reins and go, ‘Okay, yeah, this is how I feel, let’s do this.’ It’s important to see that he’s not just along for the ride, that this is something that he wants. I think this is something that’s gonna be fun for the fans.”

Fun because it’s been a long time coming or because we’re waiting for the other shoe to drop? Only time will tell.

“It was a really sweet scene, I’m excited to see it,” Spiridakos said. “I think they very much deeply care for each other. And I think that this whole thing is definitely gonna come into affect their dynamic for sure. But I do think that they’re in it for the long haul. I don’t know of a wedding anytime soon, but I can see that happening at some point.”

When the interviewer asked about Upton and Halstead’s different “approaches to policing,” Soffer reminded fans that everyone on the show feels different about it.

“That’s something that the writers always play with,” Soffer said. “For all the characters and for each dynamic on the show. Ruzek and Atwater on how they perceive situations. Rusek and Burgess. And Voight obviously has his very clear idea of ‘The city comes first, I don’t care what I have to do.’ And Hailey and Jay obviously fall on different spots on the spectrum. So, I’m sure that will be something that you see more of.”
