For the past 15 years, Daniel Craig has been playing the iconic MI6 agent James Bond. The release of his newest film, “No Time to Die,” has been pushed back multiple times. The anticipation for Craig’s fifth and likely final outing as 007 is at an all-time high. And in recognition of his storied career as the suave British spy, Craig recently earned the title of honorary Commander in the Royal Navy.
For Daniel Craig, the honor is a big deal. For the first time, the actor technically holds the same military rank as the character he’s depicted on screen since 2006. But what does it mean for his career outside of the movies?
Well, according to Deadline, the Royal Navy isn’t going to ask Daniel Craig to save the world any time soon. We have no doubt the Bond actor picked up a skill or two after working on five movies. But his new Commander role is one of public outreach, not spy thriller action.
First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Tony Radakin of the Royal Navy welcomed Craig and explained his role in detail via statement.
“I am delighted to welcome honorary Commander Daniel Craig to the Royal Navy. Our honorary officers act as ambassadors and advocates for the Service. Sharing their time and expertise to spread the message about what our global, modern, and ready Royal Navy is doing around the world,” said Radakin.
So, without further ado, we have the privilege of announcing the one, the only Commander Craig.
“I am truly privileged and honoured to be appointed the rank of Honorary Commander in the senior service,” Commander Craig said in a statement, per the official 007 website.
Daniel Craig Is a Perfect Fit For Ambassador Role as Part of the Royal Navy
Imagine you’re a sailor. You’re going about your day, tending to your duties on a ship. All of a sudden, you look up, and James Bond himself is standing there before you. Exciting stuff, to say the least.
That’s the kind of thing the Royal Navy has to look forward to due to the honorary title. And the character Danie Craig plays on screen? Well, he’s basically just a proxy for the type of thing the Royal Navy does, as a matter of course. At least, according to First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Tony Radakin.
“Daniel Craig is well known for being Commander Bond for the last 15 years – a Naval officer who keeps Britain safe through missions across the globe. That’s what the real Royal Navy does every day, using technology and skill the same way as Bond himself. I look forward to him getting to see more of our sailors and marines over the coming months and years,” Radakin continued.
