For “Everybody Loves Raymond” star Patricia Heaton, her motivation to get sober came from a very embarrassing moment. She talked about this during an appearance on the “Heart of the Matter” podcast hosted by Elizabeth Vargas, according to TooFab.

This life-changing event took place in Nashville, Tennessee. Heaton was there visiting three of her sons. The dinner party included 10 people in total. The actress said she drank wine before, during, and after the meal. During the evening, she was sharing a story, but found herself unable to speak clearly.

“And I was just filling my glass with red wine throughout the five or six hours that we were together. I don’t know how many glasses it was, and I felt completely sober and fine. I was making a joke to the table, and I started saying, ‘You know, in our family it’s a tradition…’ And I could not pronounce the word ‘tradition.’ I tried three times, and I couldn’t say the word,” the television star shared.

Patricia Heaton’s inability to speak clearly didn’t go unnoticed by one of her sons. “‘Oh, great, Mom. You can’t even talk,'” she recalled one of her sons saying during the party.

Needless to say, Patricia Heaton was embarrassed. “I was so humiliated in front of my sons and their friends. And God knows that that’s all it takes for me to have that kind of sense of their mom’s looking drunk in front of them,” she also said.

The incident also made her question what alcohol was doing to her. “But, also, I thought, ‘I feel fine. What is happening in my brain? What is the alcohol doing to my brain where the synapses are misfiring to the point where I can’t say this word?'” Heaton explained.

So, the “Everybody Loves Raymond” star decided to change the direction of her life. She has now been sober for three years.

‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ Star Patricia Heaton Said Her Drinking Escalated After Her Sons Left Home

The “Everybody Loves Raymond” actress said her drinking began to escalate after her four sons left home. “I really started looking forward to drinking and thinking about it in a way that I hadn’t before,” Patricia Heaton also said.

The 63-year-old actress also shared details about her drinking habits. “If we went out to dinner, I would have two cocktails before the meal and then at least two glasses of wine and then maybe an aperitif. If I was with really good friends that I knew well, I would have three cocktails before dinner,” she shared.

Even at this point in her life, Patricia Heaton did not feel like she had a serious drinking problem. However, she felt that could be in the future for her. “I’m not an alcoholic, but I could see it down the road. I could see it flipping over into that,” the “Everybody Loves Raymond” star explained.
