Current “Jeopardy!” champ Matt Amodio returns to our television screens tonight as he attempts to win his 29th straight game. But it looks like he’ll face some fierce competition.
Amodio’s already broken several “Jeopardy!” records. He holds the spot for the third-highest number of consecutive games won and third-highest winnings from regular season play. The champ crossed over the one million dollar mark last week, a feat only James Holzhauer and Ken Jennings have accomplished. And he’s won 28 games, only four away from Holzhauer’s 32 consecutive games.
We’ll see if Amodio’s winning streak continues tonight. But in the meantime, he’s looking to hype fans up on Twitter and engage in some friendly rivalry with tonight’s competitors.
“I’m ready for @missmayim Monday on #Jeopardy… and I know @angelicaadela13 and @justindigsdata are, too!” Amodio tweeted earlier today. It sounds like he’s trying to make “Mayim Mondays” a thing, though it’ll be difficult to keep up when she starts switching off hosting duties with Ken Jennings.
But Amodio’s “Jeopardy!” competition also shared their excitement in response to his tweet. “BRING IT, AMODIO,” Justin Stanley, one of tonight’s contestants, responded. Stanley’s been super active on Twitter since announcing he’d be on tonight’s episode. And he’s taken all the opportunities he can to rib on Amodio.
In one recent tweet, he shows a “picture” of him and fellow contestant Angelica Wilcox teaming up against Amodio.
In another, Stanley compares the experience of finding out you’re competing against Amodio in “Jeopardy!” to encountering The Terminator.
Stanley also offered a way for the two to compete without using trivia knowledge. “Ok, @AmodioMatt. My offer to settle this by dance-off or rap battle still stands. #jeopardy.” Amodio responded, “I’ve been preparing for a #jeopardy dance-off my whole life.”
‘Jeopardy!’ Champion Matt Amodio Thanks Fans for Support After Crossing One Million Dollar Mark
In last week’s Friday episode, Matt Amodio just barely crossed over the one million dollar mark on the legendary game show.
He’s only the third person to ever do that, and he thanked fans for all their support to get him to where he’s at. The “Jeopardy!” champ expressed his thanks on Twitter earlier this week. But he also included an important caveat.
“I’ve felt such tremendous support from the #Jeopardy community, I feel like we’re on this run together as a team. Thank you! (…but no, I’m not splitting the [money] amongst us all a million ways, sorry about that…),” Amodio tweeted.
We can’t really blame him. There’s a lot a person could do with a million dollars, especially when you’re still paying for Yale grad school like Amodio is.
Regardless of whether they get to split the winnings, fans are just excited to see Amodio doing so well and continuing to make “Jeopardy!” history.
