‘Jeopardy!’: Current Champion Mattea Roach Opens Up About Her Experience on the Show

by Megan Molseed

When Jeopardy! champion Mattea Roach first stepped onto the popular game show’s iconic stage earlier this year, she had a strategy for success in mind. And, so far it seems, this strategy has worked out well for the Canadian native.

Mattea Roach’s winning plan is a simple one, really. It all comes down to reading the clues as quickly as possible. And, if the Jeopardy! champ feels certain she knows the answer she buzzes in. If she doesn’t? Well, it’s simple really…Mattea just doesn’t give her buzzer a push.

“It was paring it down to the real like basic elements that you are actually in charge of,” Mattea Roach explains.

“I find that comforting,” the Jeopardy! champ continues. “Because it means I can handle the things that are up to me.”

Mattea Roach Says Her ‘Jeopardy!’ Champion Status Comes From Her Ability To Remember Things And To Remain Focused

During her reign as champion of the iconic answer-question game show, Mattea has amassed winnings into the hundreds of thousands. She is a shoo-in for the game show’s ever-popular Tournament of Champions special. Jeopardy! host Mayim Bialik has even noted Roach’s performance is of a “champion-caliber” after the contestant blew through one game, correctly answering 36 Jeopardy! questions.

“You’re almost in a fugue state, honestly, when you’re doing it,” Mattea Roach says of her winning moments.

“It’s the closest thing that I think I’ve had to an out-of-body experience,” the Jeopardy! champ adds.

According to Roach, much of her success so far doesn’t necessarily lie within a talent for trivia. Instead, the champion notes, it’s her talent for staying perfectly focused – and simply remembering things.

In fact, Mattea Roach says, many events in her past helped prepare her for the Jeopardy! stage. She has spent time competing in debate, Roach explains. An experience that helped prepare the game show contestant for the quick thinking necessary to answer the Jeopardy! questions. Matteo also notes that she honed her analytical skills and her strategic plans while working as a tutor for the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). She’s also simply been curious most of her life, Roach says. As a child, she was focused on memorizing world capitals, and she often asked her friends to tell her all about the things they had learned in school that day.

“I almost feel as though, inadvertently, everything that I’ve done in my life has in some way contributed to me being able to be successful at Jeopardy!,” Roach relates.

“I’m just lucky I’ve got a lot of mostly useless information kicking around in my brain,” the Jeopardy! champ adds. “But then in moments like Jeopardy!, it becomes useful.”
