‘Jeopardy!’ Host Mayim Bialik Addresses Criticisms About Wearing Orange Jacket to Host: ‘It’s Done’

by Caitlin Berard

Last month, Jeopardy! host Mayim Bialik debuted her orange jacket for a second time on the show. Though she’s clearly fond of the blazer, however, Bialik says it won’t appear on TV again.

It’s no secret that Jeopardy! fans are dedicated. But it turns out that they’re so dedicated, they notice when a host wears an article of clothing more than once. Not only that, but they’ll spend days discussing said article of clothing online after it’s worn.

In an interview with Drew Barrymore on The Drew Barrymore Show, Mayim Balik expressed her exasperation with the discourse surrounding the jacket. “I’ll never wear that blazer again,” Mayim said. “That’s it. It’s done.”

The Jeopardy! host then joked that her mother was the spark that ignited the seemingly never-ending discussion among fans. “My mother actually mentioned this to me before it was anywhere else,” Bialik recalled. “Maybe she started it. She said, ‘I noticed you didn’t wear a blazer, you wore a sweater.’ And I said, ‘What is she talking about?’

“I said, ‘I always wear a blazer,” Bialik said. “And then I thought, it was the sweater-blazer.”

Though her choice of jacket is secondary to her host duties, Mayim Bialik says that fashion is a big part of hosting Jeopardy! For Mayim, emulating the aesthetic of Alex Trebek was crucial when she accepted the role of host.

“For me, I really just wanted to look like the academic that I was trained to be. And to me, that does mean a certain amount of formality and decorum,” she explained on the Jeopardy! YouTube channel. “And also in great respect to Alex Trebek, the image I have of him is in a suit, it’s ‘blazered’ up.”

Mayim Bialik Expressed Surprise in ‘Jeopardy!’ Fans’ Intensity

Though Mayim Bialik set Jeopardy! Twitter ablaze with her orange jacket, it’s far from the only time fans of the gameshow have expressed a borderline alarming level of enthusiasm for the show. According to Mayim, she had no idea just how intense it would be before signing on as host.

“I did not know the depth of, in particular, the social media presence of people who are so passionate about Jeopardy!,” the new host explained. “Candice Bergen and Dustin Hoffman would email me frequently during filming, ‘this a great episode tonight of Jeopardy!‘”

“I have heard from people who I never would have thought were Jeopardy!,” Bialik continued. “People who are like, ‘Oh, I don’t miss it every single night. I’m in front of that TV.’ So I’ve learned so much about humans and I think most people watch Jeopardy!
