‘NCIS’: Did Director Vance Hint at Gibbs Being Invited Back to the Team?

by Suzanne Halliburton

How many NCIS fans screamed when Gibbs’ team found him in that abandoned Rangers station by the north shore of the lake?

Now, will there be a merger again between Gibbs (Mark Harmon) with Torres (Nick Valderrama) Jess Knight (Katrina Law) and McGee (Sean Murray)?

Obviously, we’ll know more next Monday, when NCIS shows season 19, episode two, Nearly Departed. If you caught the few seconds of the teaser, Vance seems to give a Gibbs’ return the “we’ll see” treatment. But it’s clear the team is working together, albeit on this one case of catching a serial killer.

And we still don’t know whether Gibbs, himself, wants a full-time return. There were several mentions of Rule 91, which means if you walk away, don’t look back.

The first part of Monday’s NCIS dealt with Gibbs, whether it was searching for him in the lake or getting him well. After all, he had a big wooden splinter in his guy when he first tried to get out of the water.

But Gibbs managed to call Marcie (Pam Dawber), who happened to be at the NCIS offices meeting about him.

McGee, with the help of Kasie, discovered the abandoned ranger station. And that’s where the team met up with Gibbs. They managed to solve a case about the meth runners who were using the station to secretly store their drugs in containers of gasoline.

But there was this moment with Gibbs, who said they weren’t “my team.”

“Suspended, remember?” Gibbs reminded McGree.

McGee eventually worried that Gibbs was going rule 91 on everyone after he figures out the identity of the serial killer. He tracks down Gibbs and Velma in the old storage barn near the lake.

He tells Gibbs “Rule 91 sucks. Because it is in direct violation of rule 1: Never screw over your partner.” And McGee adds: And “the team is your partner, and you not being a part of it is screwing us over.”

Gibbs tells McGee: “You don’t need me.” McGee counters, “We are better together. … Boss, you know I’m right. You have to. You built us. Now we got a serial killer to catch, but in order to do that, we need to be a team. We need to be your team.”

Gibbs commits to nothing. But at least for a week, we know they’re back together again.

“I’m proud of you,” Gibbs tells McGee. “Keep pushing, McGee. You always keep pushing.”

Does that mean he’s in? “What do you got?” Gibbs asks.

In next week’s NCIS tease, we also note that Vance and Gibbs come into attack about Gibbs’ weapons. Vance tells him “I’m going to hang on to these for now.”

NCIS also did well in its new time slot. The season 19 premiere drew an audience of 8.45 million viewers. And it won the night.
