‘NCIS: Hawai’i”: Why Vanessa Lachey Says It’s an ‘Honor’ to Play Jane Tennant

NCIS: Hawai’i star, Vanessa Lachey loves playing her character, NCIS team leader, Jane Tennant. In fact, the actress has said that she loves her new role so much, that to her, it’s truly an honor to have been given the opportunity to portray the tough-as-nails team leader.

“It’s an honor to play her,” the actress said of her NCIS: Hawai’i character.

“There are females in NCIS out there so I love this, you know starting to make it the norm,” Lachey continued, adding that part of what she loves about Tennant is the strength she portrays as the NCIS: Hawai’i agent.

“I love that she doesn’t take no for an answer,” the actress said.

“There’s a lot about her I love,” Lachey adds. “And that’s why I fell in love with this character.”

Last week, NCIS: Hawai’i, the newest addition to the NCIS universe made its television debut.

The long-awaited premiere introduced us to an entirely new branch within the franchise, the NCIS: Hawai’i team, and Lachey’s character, Jane Tennant, is the agent in charge.

Making ‘NCIS’ History

Aside from being a perfect role for Lachey, the agent also holds a first in NCIS history; She is the very first female special agent to head the NCIS: Hawai’i team.

For Lachey, portraying Jane Tennant is exciting because this female lead agent is much more than a two-dimensional character. In fact, notes Lachey, Jane Tennant leads a rich and “multi-faceted life.”

“She will continue to strive for what she wants in a male-dominated profession and at the same time, do it with grace,” Lachey says of her NCIS: Hawai’i character.

“She’s a great mom too,” the actress continues. “She always, always, has her kids in the front of her mind even when she’s at work.”

Tennant Keeps a Good Balance in ‘NCIS: Hawai’i’

For Lachey, Jane Tennant’s ability to balance her role as a mother and that of the lead agent for the NCIS: Hawai’i team is part of what makes the character so amazing.

“She’s leading 44 special agents but she’s always thinking about her kids and always puts them first,” the actress explains. “She has a love of country and she honors her country.”

But, adds Lachey, underneath the tough exterior lies a woman that many can connect with.

“At the same time, at the end of the day, she’s a vulnerable woman who just wants to love,” said Vanessa Lachey.

“When I got the job I completely broke down because I said to myself, I can do this, I am her, I believe in her, I know what she stands for,” the actress added. “I felt like this is me.”
