“NCIS” fans are still reeling from last night’s season premiere of the hit military drama. Actually, it marked the start of the long-running TV series’ 19th season. Their sister spin-off “NCIS: Hawai’i” also debuted its first season. It should be obvious that spoilers are about to ensue, but don’t say I didn’t warn you. Now’s your chance to turn around. Otherwise, venture on and forever hold your peace…
The re-appearance of Jethro Leroy Gibbs seemed to provide fans with a lot of comfort during the premiere. Sure, the scenes opened up with him the man in pretty rough shape, but at least it meant that the beloved regular was still alive. We met him in the aftermath of a boat explosion and fans yearned for his rescue.
That’s what they got, but it’s not smooth sailing for the character quite yet. In the preview for next week’s episode, fans were left with another major Gibbs teaser.
“NCIS” Keeps Fans Guessing
While “NCIS” is technically categorized as a TV drama, the show’s arcs extend far beyond that categorization. The show’s creators like to sprinkle in moments of comedy and the occasional romance as well. Still, the next episode of this 19th season seems to stay pretty true to the show’s roots. The team thrives when they do what they do best: putting their heads together to provide justice through investigative work. A big question remains, however: does the team still involve Gibbs?
Before we can answer that, there are a couple of other important bits of information to address first. Remember that serial killer that Gibbs and reporter Marcie Warren had their sights set on? It’s time to go down that rabbit hole, folks. The antagonist wreaked plenty of havoc and caused enough irreparable harm last season. Now, the leads need exploring and that means it’s time to assemble everyone together. Upon reuniting, McGee’s character actually delivered quite the emotional plea for Gibbs to return to his niche line of work.
“We are better together… You built us. Now we got a serial killer to catch, but in order to do that, we need to be a team. We need to be your team.”
It’s hard to argue with that and it looks like Gibbs is back on the saddle, after all, but some things remain yet to be seen. For example, will he ever don his uniform and badge again?

A Quick Refresh
As we delve further and further into this investigation in Season 19, it might prove to be useful to take a second and look back. Between the multiple murders of different women, our serial killer also put a bug on Gibbs last season. This is actually what led Gibbs to the doomed boat in the first place. He tried to use the boat as a means to escape before it blew up.
Named “Rule 91,” the boat stands for the following: “when you decide to walk away, don’t look back.” In the aftermath of the explosion, Gibbs was seen floating like a dead man in the water. This probably came as a survival tactic in the case of the antagonist’s watch.
Now that Gibbs is back on his feet, fans aren’t ready for what’s to come…
