‘Seinfeld’ Star Jason Alexander Offer Words of Remembrance For Estelle Harris
“One of my favorite people has passed — my TV mama, Estelle Harris,” Alexander said on Twitter. “The joy of playing with her and relishing her glorious laughter was a treat. I adore you, Estelle. Love to your family. Serenity now and always.” Seinfeld star Jason Alexander also went back on Twitter after seeing many fans’ responses to his earlier note about Estelle Harris.
Having entered the business later in life after raising children, Harris started her career in commercials. In 1992, she began her most famous role as George Costanza’s mom on the hit sitcom Seinfeld.
Her first appearance was in the Season 4 episode “The Contest.” Harris would keep playing Estelle Costanza opposite Jerry Stiller’s Frank Costanza on the series through the end of its run.
She appeared in a total of 27 episodes. Harris’ Estelle would join the rest of the beloved characters as she constantly screamed at family members. Also, she had this type of overbearing nature that would just kick up the laughs.
“It is with the greatest remorse and sadness to announce that Estelle Harris has passed on this evening at 6:25 pm,” Harris’ son Glenn said in a statement to Deadline. “Her kindness, passion, sensitivity, humor, empathy, and love were practically unrivaled, and she will be terribly missed by all those who knew her.”
Harris Had a Number of Guest-Starring Roles in Her Career
Estelle Harris also had a number of guest-starring roles in her career besides playing the mother of Jason Alexander and his character on Seinfeld. She popped up on shows like Mad About You, Law & Order, Married… With Children, Living Single, and Moesha.
Harris also had other recurring roles, too. She played Easy Mary on Night Court, in addition to appearing in 14 episodes of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody as Muriel. She had a noteworthy turn as herself on a 2009 episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, where she appeared alongside fellow Seinfeld cast members Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Alexander, and Michael Richards.
