Fans have been wondering just what exactly Hondo is doing in Mexico in the fall preview for the premiere of S.W.A.T. season five. And now we have a few more details about what is going on.

Get ready S.W.A.T. fans, the show will finally be returning to CBS with season five in October. With that said, fans have been questioning just what the heck is going on with Shemar Moore’s character, Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. Ahead of the release of season five, Moore — who is also known for starring on Criminal Minds — shared a little bit of a plot tease on Instagram. But he appeared to look very different from the Hondo we all know and love. And that in itself has sparked plenty of rumors and has left fans confused ever since.

But now we know that Hondo has been in Mexico. And that’s where we will see him when the drama’s two-part premiere returns next month. After being demoted as the team’s leader for publicly talking about racism in the LAPD, he’s spending time at a friend’s home.

S.W.A.T. executive producer Shawn Ryan went into more detail with TV Insider about why Hondo felt the need to leave Los Angeles.

“He feels bruised and battered despite having done the right thing,” Ryan said. “A lot of his swagger is gone. He’s soul searching about what to do with his life.”

A Preview of What’s to Come in ‘S.W.A.T.’ Season 5

By the sounds of it, it seems like Hondo has made some new friends down in Mexico as well. While out for a ride, he winds up finding some trouble at a neighbor’s property. And in typical Hondo fashion, he can’t help but to, well, help. He becomes close with a young woman (Val Dorantes) and her widowed mother (Pilar Padilla). He does this as he helps them fight off land grabbers who are interested in their family farm. It almost sounds a little Yellowstone-ish doesn’t it?

Executive producer Shawn Ryan, on the other hand, calls it “very epic” and a “Pale Rider-ish showdown.” He also promises that while Hondo is still in Mexico, we will join back up with the rest of the team in L.A. during the second part of the premiere.

What else can we look forward to in S.W.A.T. season five? Well, you may remember that Jim Street and Chris Alonso shared a kiss during the season four finale. They will meet back up and Ryan says that fans will get closure when it comes to their relationship as the new season goes along.

And in Hondo’s absence, Deacon Kay (Jay Harrington) is set to lead the unit. But in many ways, he is caught between a rock and a hard place. He wants to be a great leader but he also doesn’t want to betray his friend.
