Just six months after the passing of The Goldbergs star George Segal, the hit ABC series honored the actor in a special moment of its ninth season premiere.
According to Deadline, in the season premiere’s episode, titled The Goldbergs’ Excellent Adventure, grown-up Adam Goldberg (narrator Patton Oswalt) reflects on the death of his grandfather (George Segal) Albert “Pops” Solomon.
In the narration, The Goldbergs character describes Pops as the greatest guy ever. “He was my partner in crime, sometimes literally. And was always up for an adventure. Everyone loved Pops. Which is why we had such a hard time when he passed away.”
The Goldbergs character then said but months later, the family “sort of” finally moved on. Following Pops’ passing, Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) started referring to herself as an orphan and refused to go out with friends. Adam spends his time with his latest film project, Pops & Adam’s Excellent Adventure.
Adam’s brother Barry (Troy Gentile) notably becomes obsessive over the fact that Pops left his watch to Adam. Adam’s sister Erica (Hayley Orrantia) just avoids everything while also doing her fiance’s Geoff’s attempt to discuss their wedding plans.
Meanwhile, The Goldbergs’ now patriarch of the family, Murray (Jeff Garlin) seems obvious to his family’s cooping struggles. His friend Bill finally brings the issues to his attention and helps him to create a secret plan to help the others process the loss of Pops.
The Goldbergs eventually come together as a family to reflect on Pops’ influence on each family member. Adam presented his latest film project. The narrator then said, “There’s nothing harder than losing the people you love. But after that day, we began to heal. We felt ready to start living our lives again. To think about the future. While still celebrating the past.”
‘The Goldberg’ Cast & Crew Honored George Segal in the Final Epsiode of Season Eight
As previously reported, The Goldbergs star passed away at the age of 87 on March 23rd. At the time of his passing, Segal’s wife Sonia made a statement. “The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery.
Following the news, The Goldbergs crew took to Twitter and tweeted, “Thank you for everything, Pops.” The post included a video of Segal wearing a shirt that says “Pop” on it. Segal starred in the first 8 seasons of The Goldbergs.
The Goldbergs cast and crew also issued a statement about Segal’s passing. “On behalf of everyone at The Goldbergs, we are devastated at the loss of our dear friend, George. He was kind, sweet, beyond talented, and funny.”
In Segal’s final episode of The Goldbergs, titled Couple Off, ABC sent the actor off with a sepal heartwarming tribute. The 45-second clip celebrated Segal’s best moments as Pops on the hit series.
