“1883” kicks off in just a little over a week, and based on the latest trailer, it promises to be action-packed and full of danger.
The show’s official Twitter account hyped up the Dec. 19 release date with a new trailer dropped earlier this week. This 30-second trailer gives us a glimpse of James and Margaret Dutton’s (Tim McGraw and Faith Hill) journey west and all the perils that accompany it.
“This journey is a dangerous one,” the show captions the trailer. And based on what we see of McGraw, Hill, and Sam Elliott, we have no doubt that’s true. Let’s break down the “1883” trailer below.
The video immediately kicks off with McGraw’s character James Dutton holstering a gun. When his daughter Elsa (Isabel May) asks what it’s for, James replies, “Not sure. But I’d sure hate to don’t have it when we find out.”
The fact that James already knows there’s going to be trouble says a lot. Like his descendant, John Dutton, James would rather be prepared for anything and everything. And based on the rest of the trailer, we can tell James will be pulling out that gun and several others on his journey west.
We hear Elliott’s character, Shea Brennan, say in a voiceover, “This journey will be dangerous all the way to Oregon” in the video. While he’s talking, the video jumps between clips of horses and wagons stuck in water, Native American tribespeople riding towards them, wagons on fire.
We see more fire when someone throws what looks like a Molotov cocktail into someone’s home, and it burns up. We see Civil War flashbacks, people shooting, stabbing, and hitting each other, and Hill looking distraught. At one point, some text superimposed over the trailer says, “The road west was paved with blood.”
Ain’t that the truth. There’s bound to be blood in the Dutton’s future based on this explosive teaser for the first season.
‘1883’ Star Faith Hill Opens Up About Separating Marriages on Set
Part of what should make Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s “1883” performances so raw and authentic is that they’re actually husband and wife in real life. But in a recent interview with PEOPLE, Hill revealed that she tries not to channel their marriage too much into their work.
“We have made it a point not to work on our scenes together until we’re on set,” Hill said. “It’s important that we react to one another naturally as characters, not as husband and wife.”
This also caused her to struggle with one of the more intimate scenes in the show. In real life, Hill would rather keep intimate moments between her and McGraw… just between her and McGraw.
“It was really uncomfortable for me personally because I’m a very shy person in that type of situation,” Hill said. “I obviously feel comfortable with my husband, but this is different. For intimate scenes, I feel like that belongs to us.”
