1883‘s own Margaret Dutton, Faith Hill, says it was paramount to separate her marriage to Tim McGraw from their ancestral Duttons.

Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have been touring together for the majority of their over-two-decade marriage. Bringing their love on-stage to channel into music is the perfect combo. Doing so for two characters wildly different from themselves, however, was not. Or, so says Hill herself.

“We have made it a point not to work on our scenes together until we’re on set,” the country icon says of her and husband Tim McGraw’s work on 1883 for PEOPLE. “It’s important that we react to one another naturally as characters not as husband and wife.”

The couple play ancestral Duttons, James and Margaret, for the Yellowstone spinoff. And come December 19, we’ll see why these two were so adamant about keeping their marriage outside of these characters.

It’s an entirely new world for these two regardless. Despite being country music megastars, both have prior acting credits. Tim McGraw made his feature film debut with Friday Night Lights in 2004, an instant classic. He would feature in Oscar-winning The Blind Side, too.

Faith Hill would move to the screen for the first time in 2004, too, with Stepford Wives. 2017’s Dixieland was another notable turn by the icon.

But through all this, the couple has never appeared on-screen together. They’ve never acted together for any project, as a matter of fact. And in this way, 1883 truly brought a whole new dynamic to their lives.

‘There Was Some Pent-Up Aggression Going On!’: ‘1883’ Brought Out the Fire in Hill and McGraw

This dynamic would prove explosive, too. According to her husband, 1883‘s Tim McGraw, Faith brought everything she’s bottled up during their 20+ year marriage into filming the Yellowstone prequel.

“It’s been incredible to do scenes together and to watch her work,” McGraw tells PEOPLE. But as any married couple knows, working together can be equal parts fruitful, shocking, and, well, rage-filled.

“We had this scene where she has to slap me. I was expecting a finger slap but it was a paw to the jaw,” McGraw reveals. But he would soon find out “There was 25 years of pent-up aggression going on!” he jokes.

And when audiences see that full swing from Faith Hill on-screen in 1883? “You realize it was a genuine hit.”

Color us intrigued to see where this scene fits into the prequel. The 19th century West was a cruel, unforgiving and lawless place. Any amount of scenarios could lead to Hill’s Margaret slapping her husband, James. And we’ll find out come December 19 only on Paramount Plus.
