A Sign of Things to Come: 1883 lead Tim McGraw is sharing a gorgeous Texas sunrise from the set of the Yellowstone prequel.

The Lone Star State holds beauty unlike any other place. Yellowstone fans are expecting to see it on full display, too, once 1883 hits screens this December. And series lead Tim McGraw just upped the ante with a truly brilliant Texas sunrise; one he had to be up before dawn to see – just like a true cowboy.

“‘Amarillo Sky’ On set filming @1883official,” posts McGraw to his official Instagram Friday. The historical prequel is currently filming in Amarillo, Texas, and nature is giving the cast & crew quite the show. Or at least it did at sunrise this AM, which the country superstar and actor managed to capture perfectly.

Support for 1883 filming in the Lone Star State is flooding into McGraw’s Instagram, too. As follower Mary replies, “Texas panhandle have some of the best sunrises and sunsets. Beauty for miles and miles.” Kelly echoes with “God paints some great ones in Texas!”

“Gorgeous sky! Can’t wait to see you and you’re beautiful wife in 1883! How blessed are you both to be working on this show! Cheers from CA,” comments fan Marisa.

‘1883’ Begins in Texas, Leads to Duttons’ Montana Roots

Through various social media and studio updates, we’re learning that filming for 1883 is taking place in both Montana and Texas. This is where the prequel’s story takes place, too, and series creator Taylor Sheridan is a stickler for accuracy and staying “true to life.” In short: it makes sense to film where your story is set if you can.

As a result, audiences will see the ancestors of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton join America’s Westward Expansion. The Duttons will start off in Texas, and through plot details for 1883 we know they’ll wind up in Montana (where Yellowstone‘s “modern day” Duttons reside).

According to Paramount Network’s plot synopsis1883 will follow the Dutton family as they “embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America.”

The period prequel will be everything you want out of a Yellowstone Western, too. And all the while, we’ll get to watch Sam Elliott guide these wayward Texans to a “better life” out West. Like many American families before the turn of the 20th century, the Duttons will be fleeing poverty in the East to chase the American dream as part of the Westward Expansion.

Just a year ago, such a spinoff as 1883 didn’t even feel possible. Yet here we are and Yellowstone is taking over the world. As always, it’s a damn good time to be an Outsider.
